SBC Cotton Bowl Committee members presented the team trophy and two individual awards to the Tennessee football squad Tuesday night at halftime of the Vols game against Kentucky.
UT knocked off Texas A&M 38-7 Jan. 1 in Dallas to finish the season 10-3. It was the largest margin of victory in Tennessee's 45-year bowl history and Texas A&M's largest margin of defeat in a bowl game.
Immediate past chairman Fin Ewing, bowl president Rick Baker and team selection chairman Dan Petty made the presentations on behalf of the SBC Cotton Bowl. Accepting the awards were UT President Dr. John Petersen, Athletics Director Mike Hamilton and head coach Phillip Fulmer, along with the 2004 squad members.
Defensive tackle Justin Harrell received the McKnight Award as the game's Outstanding Defensive Player. Harrell had three tackles, including a quarterback sack, a tackle for loss, and quarterback pressure in the first half alone.
The Sanford Trophy for Outstanding Offensive Player honors went to quarterback Rick Clausen, who was 18-of-27 for 222 yards passing. Clausen threw three touchdown passes in the game to three different Vol receivers.
The Vols then accepted the Field Scovell Trophy for their SBC Cotton Bowl triumph, capping a 10-win season for the eighth time in Fulmer's 12 full seasons as head coach. It was Tennessee's 24th overall bowl victory, which ranks third in Division I-A.
