BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - After leading the 10th-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols to a thrilling 68-67 triumph at No. 15/14 Connecticut on Saturday afternoon, freshman Alexis Hornbuckle has been named Co-Southeastern Conference Player of the Week. Hornbuckle shared the honor with Florida forward Tamia Williams.
In the victory at UConn, Hornbuckle came off the bench and tallied a team-high 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. She also chipped in six rebounds, four assists and two steals in 27 minutes of action. The victory was UT's first against the Huskies since Feb. 1, 2001, and ended a six-game Lady Vol losing streak in the series.
Prior to the UConn game, the Charleston, W.Va., native had started six consecutive games at the point guard spot in place of Loree Moore, who was recovering from a tonsillectomy performed on Dec. 10. During that span, Hornbuckle averaged 11.7 ppg and 5.7 rpg. On the season, she ranks second on the team in scoring (9.2 ppg) and leads the squad in assists (31), steals (30) and blocks (11).
The Lady Vols (10-3) will be in action again when they kick off their SEC regular-season slate against Arkansas at Thompson-Boling Arena on Thursday at 7 p.m. UT will be looking to improve upon its 54-game SEC home-court winning streak. The contest will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast.
