FORMER LADY VOL TENNIS PLAYER IN WTA TOUR RANKINGS

Former Lady Vol All-American tennis player Tammy Encina entered the WTA Tour Rankings last Monday at No. 881 before rising to No. 831 in today's rankings.
Encina made her debut at the ITF Circuit $10,000 event in Victoria, Mexico, from Sept. 6-12, reaching the final before falling to Melissa Torres of Mexico, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Encino paired with former Lady Vol Alison Ojeda to win the doubles title at the tournament, defeating Alicia Pillay of South Africa and Katarzyna Siwosz of Poland in the final, 6-4, 3-6, 6-1.
At the $10,000 event in Matamoros, Mexico, held from Sept. 13-19, Encina reached the quarterfinals before losing to Torres in straight sets, 6-1, 7-5. Encina and Ojeda were runners-up in doubles action, falling in the final to Americans Lauren Fisher and Aleke Tsoubanos by 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 scores.
At Tennessee, Encina's career was highlighted by advancement to the NCAA Singles Championship quarterfinals in 2003, earning All-American status in the process. She qualified for the championships again in 2004, falling in the first round.
