Burnett, a senior linebacker from Carson, Calif., made a career high 16 tackles, including one TFL and 10 primary stops. The Vols defense battled the SEC's top-rated passer, Chris Leak, and held the Gators to just seven points after halftime. Florida converted only 2-of-6 third-down conversions in the second half. Burnett stands second among SEC leaders with 12.0 tackles per game.
Wilhoit, a sophomore placekicker from Hendersonville, rebounded from his first career PAT miss to hit the winning 50-yard field goal with six seconds left in the win over Florida. Wilhoit's failed PAT left the Vols trailing 28-27 with 3:25 to play. But Tennessee regained possession with under a minute remaining and, after a 28-yard drive, Wilhoit made good on his second chance.
This week's awards mark the first time either Burnett or Wilhoit have been named SEC Player of the Week. Earlier this year, center Jason Respert was named offensive lineman of the week following the Vols' 42-17 win over UNLV.
The league also announced that the Oct. 2 game between Auburn and Tennessee has been set for a 7:45 p.m. EDT kickoff on ESPN.
