In their first meeting ever, Tennessee scored 21 first quarter points and went on to post a 62-3 victory over UNLV before a Tennessee record crowd of 106,212 and the 12th largest in NCAA history, thanks to the expansion at the north end. The game also marked the 75th anniversary of the opening of Shields-Watkins Field.
Tailbacks Jay Graham and Mark Levine each scored twice and Peyton Manning threw a 63-yard touchdown pass to Joey Kent and scored on a 1-yard run himself. For his part, Kent caught six passes for 151 yards and was joined in cracking the century mark by fellow wideout Marcus Nash, who caught six for 103.
Defensive backs Terry Fair and freshman Eric Westmoreland scored after fumble recoveries. Jeremaine Copeland scored on a 10-yard run.
Sophomore linebacker Al Wilson led the way defensively with seven tackles and two tackles for loss. Jeff Coleman and Jonathan Brown had sacks. Brown added a tackle for loss as did Ron Green and Billy Ratliff.
