Day 13 - Vols Look Ahead To Situational Scrimmage
August 20, 2004 | Football
Aug. 20, 2004
Tennessee prepared for its next scrimmage opportunity with a two-hour practice in full pads Friday at Haslam Field.
The Vols scrimmage Saturday at Neyland Stadium -- the team's first game-like situation since head coach Phillip Fulmer promoted freshmen quarterbacks Erik Ainge and Brent Schaeffer to the first team.
"Our goal is to be as good as we possibly can be," Fulmer said. "We feel like we needed to go the direction we went for a number of reasons. These two youngsters are talented and I think they give us our best chance to be successful short-term and long-term, or obviously we wouldn't have made the decision."
Since little more than a fortnight remains until opening day, UT's coaching staff will display a tighter script during Saturday's exhibition.
"It will be a situational-type scrimmage," Fulmer said. "We will have a series of goal line for both teams, an overtime period, some open field stuff that will challenge and test the quarterbacks -- and our safeties. That's as big an issue to me as the quarterback issue is."
Tennessee hosts UNLV Sept. 5 in the first Sunday game in Neyland Stadium history. Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. Eastern time and tickets can be purchased by calling the UT ticket office at 800-332-VOLS, or 656-1200 in the Knoxville area.
`VOL CALLS' KICKS OFF 2004 SEASON MONDAY
"Vol Calls", the Vol Network's weekly call-in radio show, kicks off its 16th season Monday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. The show can be heard across the state of Tennessee and throughout much of the Eastern United States on the more than 50-plus stations that make up the Vol Radio Network. Fans also can listen online by going to utsports.com.
Bob Kesling, voice of the Tennessee Volunteers, serves as the show's host for the 15th year. Head coach Phillip Fulmer appears on the show each week during football season.
"Vol Calls" is the exclusive radio program where Tennessee fans can call in and talk with Fulmer and other UT head coaches. Vol Network veteran Brent Hubbs joins Kesling on the show to help answer questions and provide insight on UT athletics. Former Vol standouts Tim Priest (1968-70), Jeff Francis (1985-88) and Terence Cleveland (1986-89) will join the show as rotating special guests throughout the 2004 football season.
Monday's debut guest lineup features Fulmer, UT legends Gus Manning and Haywood Harris, who have just written a book on Tennessee's national championship football teams, and interviews from selected UT football players. "Vol Calls" runs for 36-straight weeks through April 25, 2005. Fans can place a "Vol Call" anywhere in the United States by dialing 1-800-688-8657, or Tennessee customers of Verizon Wireless can dial *UT.
Beginning with the Aug. 30 show and continuing through football season, "Vol Calls" will originate in front of a live audience at the Texas Roadhouse restaurant located at 7522 Kingston Pike in Knoxville. Customers will have the opportunity to register for weekly giveaways including tickets to UT home football games and complimentary dinners at Texas Roadhouse. A grand prize winner at the end of the season receives an all expense paid trip to Tennessee's bowl game.
BIG ORANGE VOLUNTEERS TO AID VICTIMS IN FLORIDA
The UT Athletics Department announced Thursday the organizing of "OrangeAid," an effort in conjunction with the American Red Cross to assist Floridians affected by Hurricane Charley.
For a donation to the Red Cross, fans will have the opportunity to get autographs from head coach Phillip Fulmer and a select group of players at West Town Mall Sunday from 3-5 p.m. All proceeds go to the American Red Cross and their efforts to assist victims of Hurricane Charley, which struck the Florida Gulf Coast one week ago north of the Fort Meyers area.
The autograph session and donation table will be set up inside West Town Mall in front of JC Penney's.
