PITTSBURGH - Tennessee men's tennis player Ben Rogers is making his presence felt on the 2004 ITA summer circuit this week. The Kingsport native has advanced to the singles semifinal round at the ITA National Collegiate Clay Court Championships at the Mt. Lebanon Tennis Center.
Rogers is seeded No. 4 and is slated to face No. 6-seeded Miami (Fla.) junior Jeremiah Fuller in semifinal action Friday.
Oddly, Rogers needed to play only two matches to advance to the semis, as his round-of-64 and quarterfinal opponents both withdrew from the 64-player draw. In the round of 32, Rogers posted a 6-4, 7-5 victory over Jared McKiernan. Rogers then dispatched No. 14-seeded Zach Skorupka by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the round of 16.
Friday's other semifinal matchup features top-seeded Kentucky senior Matt Emery against No. 3-seeded Alex Stone.
As a freshman for the Vols this past season, Rogers tallied a 6-6 singles record while also compiling a 14-6 overall mark in doubles.
