* Tennessee has had 30 players honored a total of 33 times. Peyton Manning (1996-97), Ricky Towsend (1973-74) and Chip Kell (1969-70) were two-time honorees. |
Tennessee linebacker Kevin Burnett has been named to the 2004 Playboy All-America football team.
Burnett, a senior from Carson, Calif., is the 30th player in UT history to be selected to the 47th annual preseason all-star squad since its inception in 1957. He spent a recent weekend in Phoenix, Ariz., for a photo shoot that will appear in an upcoming issue.
The Vols' 30 players have been honored a total of 33 times by the magazine. Quarterback Peyton Manning (1996-97), placekicker Ricky Townsend (1973-74) and offensive lineman Chip Kell (1969-70) were two-time honorees from Tennessee.
This year marks the fourth consecutive season a Tennessee player has been selected to the preseason team. Burnett joins recent selections John Henderson (2001), Kelley Washington (2002) and Michael Munoz (2003).
Burnett earned second-team All-Southeastern Conference honors after recording 90 tackles for the 10-3 Volunteers. He missed most of the 2002 campaign after suffering a season-ending knee injury in the season opening win over Wyoming.
Recently, Burnett and Munoz were elected by their teammates for another tour as captains for the 2004 Vols, making them the first Vols since J.G. Lowe in 1924-25 to be elected in consecutive years. Prior to last season, the duo became the first juniors to be named a Tennessee captain since All-America guard Bob Doblestein in 1944.
