THE GAME
The top-seeded and #2/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols (28-3) advance to the Sweet 16 for an incredible 23rd consecutive time in the NCAA Tournament taking on 15/17th-ranked and 4th-seeded Baylor (26-8) in an NCAA Midwest Regional semifinal contest on March 28th in Norman, Oklahoma. The winner from the UT-BU game will face the winner of the Vanderbilt-Stanford game on Tues., Mar. 30 at 8:00 p.m. CT for the right to advance to the Final Four.
IN OUR LAST GAME
The top-seeded and #2/3-ranked Tennessee Lady Vols utilized a balanced attack in which six players recorded double-digit points to earn their 23rd-consecutive trip to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 with a 79-59 win over ninth-seeded and #25-ranked DePaul at the Tallahassee Leon County Civic Center on March 22, 2004. The victory was UT's second against the Blue Demons this season, as it came away with a 96-89 overtime win in Chicago on Dec. 17. Unlike the first meeting between the squads, the Big Orange took control of the contest early in the second match-up. After DePaul scored the opening basket, Coach Pat Summitt's club responded with a 10-0 run to lead 10-3 at the first media timeout. With DPU trailing by six, 19-13, minutes later, the Lady Vols charged further ahead with a 13-2 spurt, capped by two straight 3-pointers by junior Brittany Jackson, to take a 17-point advantage with 7:32 to go in the half. Sophomore Shanna Zolman helped Tennessee close the opening frame on a strong note, as she connected on four 3-pointers and an 18-foot jumper in the final five minutes en route to UT's 50-24 halftime lead. In the first stanza, the Orange and White shot 53 percent from the field, including 64 percent from beyond the arc while holding DePaul to just 25 percent shooting. The Lady Vols also dominated the boards, 33-12, grabbing as many offensive rebounds as DPU had in total. Individually, Zolman contributed 18 points and senior Ashley Robinson hauled in 12 rebounds. Zolman's four first-half 3-pointers equaled a UT NCAA Tournament single-game record. Following the intermission, neither team made much of a push as UT gradually pulled ahead by 30 points to lead 65-35 with 12:31 leftt. Tennessee would go ahead by as many as 32 before DPU closed the game on an 18-6 run. Totaling double figures for the Lady Vols were Zolman (18), senior LaToya Davis (12), junior Shyra Ely (12), Jackson (11), senior Tasha Butts (10) and freshman Sidney Spencer (10). Davis also recorded 10 rebounds and seven assists to collect the first double-double of her career, while Spencer came up one rebound shy of her first career double-double for the second-consecutive game. As a team, Tennessee shot 48 percent (32-67) from the floor and 53 percent (9-17) from long range, while DePaul hit on 29 percent (19-66) of its attempts. The Big Orange's nine 3-pointers were the most in the team's NCAA Tournament history. The Lady Vols also dominated the rebounding battle, 55-30.
NEXT OPPONENT
If UT is successful with a win over #15/17 Baylor, they would advance to play the winner between #10/8-ranked Stanford and #13/14-ranked Vanderbilt on Mar. 30.
LADY VOLS ON TV
Sixteen Lady Vol games have been on television this year with UT sporting a 14-2 record.
ON THIS DAY
The Lady Vols have produced a 0-1 all-time record on Mar. 28. UT is 0-0 at home, 0-0 away and 0-1 at neutral sites. Last time out on Mar. 28, UT lost to Southern Cal, 59-83, at the 1986 Final Four in Lexington, Kentucky.
LOOKING BACK

8-4-9, ALREADY
Seems like it was just yesterday, well, Jan. 14, 2003, that we were celebrating Coach Pat Summitt's 800th collegiate victory. The win over DePaul in the 2004 NCAA Tournament was victory number 849 for Summitt.

GAME REPORT 31 & POSSIBLE GAME 32
(For extensive UT game notes on each of the NCAA Midwest Regional teams - Baylor, Stanford and Vanderbilt, please refer to the additional notes section).
IF YOU SURVIVE AND ADVANCE, - YOU'RE HEADING TO THE BIG EASY
The six-time NCAA Champion Tennessee Lady Vols have advanced to the Sweet 16 for the 23rd consecutive time. On Sun., Mar. 28 at 8:30 p.m. (ESPN2) Tennessee faces #15/17 Baylor in a Sweet 16 match-up hoping to advance to the Midwest Regional Championship game on Mar. 30 in Norman, Oklahoma., versus the Stanford or Vanderbilt winner.
NO PRESSURE BUT. . .EVERY LADY VOL HAS PLAYED IN ONE
Every Lady Vol hoopster (since 1976) has played in at least one Final Four during her career at Tennessee. Lady Vol seniors Tasha Butts, LaToya Davis and Ashley Robinson have gone to two Final Fours during their careers at UT -the 2002 Final Four in San Antonio, Texas, losing to Connecticut in semifinal play and the 2003 Final Four in Atlanta, Ga., (losing to UConn in the Championship game).
GETTING TO THE ROUND OF 16 SURE IS SWEET
The Lady Vols have been fortunate to advance to the Sweet 16 round of the NCAA Tournament for 23 consecutive years. Additionally, Tennessee has made it to the regional finals in 18 of the last 22 trips to the Sweet Sixteen. The Lady Vols did not advance to the regional finals in 1985 (losing to Ole Miss, 63-60), in 1992 (losing to Western Kentucky, 75-70), in 1994 (losing to Louisiana Tech, 71-68) and in 2001 after a devastating loss to Xavier, 80-65.
SOME FAMILIAR FACES
The Tennessee Lady Vols see some familiar faces among the 15 other teams remaining in the 2004 NCAA Tournament as UT took on nine of the these teams in 11 games this season. UT posted an 8-3 overall record taking wins from then-#10/11 Louisiana Tech H (85-65), #17 Notre Dame (83-59) H, #6/5 Stanford (70-66 OT) A, #19/17 Georgia (70-67) A, #1 Duke (72-69) A, #15/17 LSU (85-62) H and Vanderbilt (79-54 H and 94-88 A) . Tennessee's three losses were to then #5/5 Texas (60-70) H, #4/3 Connecticut (67-81) H and #20/16 Georgia (66-68 OT) N.
SWEET 16 RANDOM NOTES
- The University of Tennessee Lady Vols have hosted six NCAA Mideast Regional Tournaments since NCAA play began in 1982. Tennessee hosted the 1982, 1984 and 1987 Mideast Regionals in Stokely Athletics Center, the 1990 Final Four, the 1991, 1995 and 2003 Mideast Regionals in Thompson-Boling Arena.
- When the Lady Vols faced BYU in the 2002 Sweet 16 in Ames, Iowa, the Cougars became the 61st new opponent for the Lady Vols in NCAA play.
- Until UT's loss to Xavier in the 2001 NCAA Mideast Regional semis, Tennessee had won six consecutive Sweet 16 meetings dating back to 1995.
- Prior to the loss to Xavier, the Lady Vols' last hiccup in the NCAA Regional semifinals came in 1994 versus Louisiana Tech at the Mideast Regionals held at the University of Arkansas. UT lost to the Lady Techsters, 71-68.
- The lowest seeded team to beat Tennessee in the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 was fourth-seeded Louisiana Tech in 1994 and fourth seeded Western Kentucky in 1992.
- UT has faced seven different conferences in Sweet 16 games: ACC, Atlantic 10, Big East, Big 12, Colonial, Conference USA, Mountain West , SEC and Sunbelt. Of the 22 all-time games, UT is most likely to see a team from the Atlantic Coast Conference - five contests have come against ACC opponents. Four games in Sweet 16 play have featured opposition from the SEC and Sunbelt Conferences, each.
- The Lady Vols played its longest game in school history in the NCAA Sweet 16. Tennessee needed three overtimes to defeat Mississippi, 90-83, in the 1983 NCAA Mideast Regional semifinals held at Notre Dame.

YOU'D THINK AFTER 30 YEARS. . .
After last season, Tennessee coach Pat Summitt declared, "we need to lighten our schedule." Except, she has said that each and every year she has coached the Big Orange. So this season's "lightened" schedule included opening the season with 11 consecutive games (Nov. 23 through Jan. 4) against teams who are playing in the 2004 NCAA Tournament.

SUMMITT'S NCAA RECORD
Lady Vol coach Pat Summitt has coached in 1,015 basketball games to date producing an incredible 849-166 (.838) overall record. What's even more amazing (at least to me) is that she has nearly coached in 100 NCAA Tournament games -- her record in the NCAA's, 82-16 (.833) in 98 NCAA contests. Just as an FYI, Dean Smith (North Carolina) leads the men's side of things in the NCAAs recording 65 NCAA wins from 1967-97. Summitt has appeared in all 23 (consecutive) NCAA Tournaments, and has now tied Smith also appeared in 23 consecutive tournaments from 1975-97.
OUTTA KNOXVILLE FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER IN MARCH
For the first time in 25 years, the Tennessee Lady Vols won't be playing a post-season play-off game in Knoxville. Tennessee has won 44 consecutive NCAA play-off games at home since 1982 (32-0 in NCAA First/Second Rounds and 12-0 in six NCAA Mideast Regionals hosted in Knoxville. When you add in the AIAW years, Tennessee has won 50 consecutive (since Mar. 15, 1980) post-season AIAW/NCAA games at home. Overall, UT has won 52 out of 53 games in Knoxville since Mar. 10, 1979. UT's only loss in post-season play at home was a 74-72 AIAW Region II defeat to Old Dominion on Mar. 10, 1979. That year, the winner of the Region II Tournament was given the higher seed in the AIAW Regional Championship Tournament (Sweet 16) while the loser was sent to a tougher regional bracket. As the Region II winner, Old Dominion traveled to Tennessee Tech for the AIAW South Regional while Tennessee earned a trip to the Bronx, N.Y. (Fordham Univ.) for the East Regional. Both ODU and Tennessee advanced to the AIAW "Final Four" in Greensboro, N.C. that year.
KNOXVILLE'S NOT FRIENDLY TO THE OPPOSITION
The average score of an NCAA First/Second round game against the Lady Vols in Knoxville typically does not bode well for the opposition. The Lady Vols defeat its NCAA Tournament opponents in Knoxville by a score of 89.5-52.1 - or an average victory margin of 37.8 ppg.
UT GETS THE POINT
The Lady Vols turned in their highest point total ever in the NCAA Tournament scoring 113 versus Appalachian State in First Round action on Mar. 13, 1999. Previously, Tennessee had scored 111 points against North Carolina A&T on Mar.16, 1994 in NCAA opening round play. UT's 113 points against ASU was the fifth most ever scored in NCAA First/Second Round action.
THESE SEEDS GREW
Tennessee has played in an incredible 98 games in the NCAA Tournament since 1982. Six times the Lady Vols have brought home NCAA titles to Knoxville. On the 16 occasions when UT lost in the tournament, the following seeds bounced the Lady Vols out.
#1 seed-1982, 1984, 1986, 1995, 2000, 2002, 2003
#2 seed-1983, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1993
#3 seed-1999
#4 seed-1992, 1994, 2001
UT'S NCAA OT GAMES
UT has played in five overtime games in the NCAA Tournament producing a 4-1 record including two overtime wins in the Final Four. UT defeated Southern Cal, 91-90, in the first overtime game in NCAA tourney history. UT advanced to the NCAA's first Final Four in 1982 from that overtime affair. The Lady Vols played in the first triple OT in NCAA history when UT defeated Ole Miss, 90-83, in 1983. In UT's most heartbreaking loss in the program's history, Virginia defeated UT, 79-75 in OT, for the 1990 NCAA East Regional title. That loss kept the Lady Vols from playing in the 1990 Final Four on its home court - Thompson-Boling Arena. In 1991, the Lady Vols returned the overtime favor to Virginia and defeated the Cavaliers in the first overtime NCAA title game, 70-67. Tennessee's last extra stanza game in the NCAA Tournament came at the 1996 Final Four with a dramatic, 88-83, victory over Connecticut in the Final Four Semi game.
OUR GANG IN TALLAHASSEE?
The University of Tennessee women's basketball team traveled to Tallahassee, Fla., for the first time since the 1984-85 season. While the Lady Vols had no playing history with their first round opponent, Colgate, Tennessee had faced off against a Patriot League team in the last year. UT defeated Army, 96-44, on Nov. 30, 2002 in Puerto Rico. Colgate split with Army this season losing 79-76 on the road and winning at home, 69-56. However, the Lady Vols are very familiar with DePaul and George Washington. Doug Bruno's DePaul squad almost claimed its first win ever over the Lady Vols on Dec. 17, 2003 but lost a heartbreaker in overtime, 96-89 in Chicago. Tennessee's record against the Blue Demons now stands at 15-0 dating back to 1991. UT and George Washington have met four times with the Lady Vols claiming all four wins. Most recently, the two teams met on Dec. 30, 2003, in Washington, D.C., where the Lady Vols took a 65-51 victory.
RANKED TEAMS - MIDWEST
In the AP and USA TODAY/ESPN polls, six teams from the 2004 NCAA Midwest Regional are ranked led by second/third-ranked Tennessee. The next highest ranked team is Stanford (#10/8), and is followed by Oklahoma (#11/13), Vanderbilt (#13/14), Baylor (#15/17) and DePaul (#NR/25).

AP POLL NOTES
The Associated Press women's Top 25 basketball poll released on Jan. 1, 2001, marked the 400th appearance by the Lady Vols. Since the poll was started in 1976, UT has failed to appear in just 14 polls through the years. Currently, UT has been ranked in 339 consecutive polls and since the 1986-87 season and the Lady Vols have been in the top 10 for all but one poll. UT is the only team to have been ranked every year for the last 28 years of the poll. UT has appeared at least once per season over the poll's history.

SEVEN SEC TEAMS DANCE
The Southeastern Conference had seven teams to start dancing in March. In the Mideast Regional, the SEC's natural regional site, there were no teams represented. The West Regional still features Georgia and LSU (Ole Miss lost to Villanova), Auburn traveled to the East Regional and lost to UConn, while Tennessee and Vanderbilt are still alive in the Midwest Regional (Florida bowed to Baylor).
UT'S LAST LOSS TO AN UNRANKED TEAM?
When is the last time Tennessee lost to an unranked team? That would have been to LSU on Mar. 2, 2002 at the SEC Tournament in Nashville, Tenn. LSU had been in and out of the Top 25 polls in late January and February. Prior to that, UT's last loss to an unranked team was five years previous (to the day) losing to Auburn on Mar. 2, 1997 at the SEC Tournament in Chattanooga, Tenn.
WOW 11 SEASONS OF 10 SEC VICTORIES
In the win over LSU in the regular season, Tennessee claimed its 14th SEC victory of the year. The Lady Vols have now registered double-digit victories in conference play an incredible 11 times. Since the 1991-92 season when SEC play expanded, the Lady Vols have won at least 10 games in the following years: 1992-10 games, 1993-11 games, 1994-11 games, 1995-11 games, 1998-14 games, 1999-13 games, 2000-13 games, 2001- 14 games, 2002- 13 games, 2003- 14 games and 2004-14 games.
34 CONSECUTIVE SEC REGULAR SEASON WINS
With the victory over LSU on 2-29-04, the Lady Vols have now won 34 consecutive regular season SEC games dating back to a loss at Vanderbilt on Feb. 2, 2002. Two years ago, the Commodores wrapped up the Lady Vols going away with a 76-59 victory in Nashville to deal Tennessee its only SEC loss of the season.
54 CONSECUTIVE SEC HOME WINS
With the victory over LSU on 2-29-04, the Lady Vols have now won 54 consecutive SEC home games. The last SEC loss at home was to Georgia on Dec. 8, 1996, 94-93 (OT).
PECK'S THE ONLY ONE
The roll call goes like this: Sylvia Hatchell, Sharon Fanning, Jane Albright, Lea Henry, Nancy Darsch, Trish Roberts, and now Mickie DeMoss. etc., UT coach Pat Summitt has faced many former players and assistant coaches in a variety of games thru the years but Carolyn Peck is the only one to record a victory over her former boss. While at Purdue, Peck handed Summitt a 78-68 loss on Nov.15, 1998 in the State Farm Tip-Off Classic in West Lafayette, Ind. The defeat snapped UT's 46-game consecutive winning streak (that was second only to Louisiana Tech's all-time 54-game winning streak).
100 POINT GAMES
Since 1974, the Lady Vols have gone over the century mark 69 times. Noteworthy: Tennessee went over 100 points in an NCAA playoff game for the first time ever in 1993-94 with the win over North Carolina A&T, 111-37. The 1987-88 team hit triple digits in seven games leading the NCAA.
THIS IS AMAZING
From 1980-1997, the Lady Vols claimed a total of six SEC regular season titles in 17 years. Since 1998, Tennessee has captured the last seven consecutive SEC regular season crowns producing an amazing 85-3 record. UT's only league losses have been to Vandy, Georgia and LSU during this stretch.
SEC LEAGUE PLAY
UT owns a league best record of 214-29 against all SEC teams dating back to 1983.
SEC PLAY 2004
This season, the Lady Vols played home-and-home games with Arkansas and South Carolina and traditional rival, Vanderbilt. Last season, the Lady Vols played home-and-home games with Auburn from the West and Florida from the Eastern Division of the SEC.
