Munoz Named to Walter Camp All-America Squad

NEW HAVEN, CT - University of Tennessee offensive tackle Michael Munoz was chosen second-team All-America by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. Orange Bowl-bound USC and Oklahoma each placed three players on the All-America team, the 115th honored by the organization. The prestigious All-America team was announced live this evening on ESPN's The Home Depot College Football Awards show.
Munoz was also named to the American Football Coaches Association All-America team while being honored with the presentation of the Vincent dePaul Draddy Trophy, known as the "Academic Heisman," as the nation's top scholar-athlete at the 47th Annual Awards Banquet of the National Football Foundation and College Hall of Fame.
Headlining the offensive squad is the 2004 Walter Camp Player of the Year Matt Leinart, a junior quarterback from USC. A 6-foot 5-inch, 225-pound lefthander from Santa Ana, Calif., Leinart has thrown for 2,990 yards and 28 touchdowns for the top-ranked Trojans.
Joining Leinart in the offensive backfield are two running backs from the Big 12 Conference - Cedric Benson (Texas) and Adrian Peterson (Oklahoma). Benson rushed for 1,764 yards and 19 touchdowns for the Longhorns. Just a freshman, Peterson ran for 1,843 yards and 15 touchdowns for the second-ranked Sooners.
A pair of senior receivers from the Big Ten Conference - Braylon Edwards (Michigan) and Taylor Stubblefield (Purdue) made the team, while junior Heath Miller (Virginia) is the tight end.
Senior Alex Barron (Florida State), a repeat Walter Camp First Team All-America selection, headlines the offensive line. Joining Barron on the offensive line are seniors Vince Carter (Oklahoma), David Baas (Michigan), Elton Brown (Virginia) and Jammal Brown (Oklahoma).
Mike Nugent (Ohio State), a 2002 Walter Camp First Team All-America selection, is the team's placekicker. Nugent has connected on 20-of-23 field goals, including 5-of-6 from 50+ yards, for the Buckeyes.
Leading the defensive unit is a repeat Walter Camp All-America selection, senior linebacker Derrick Johnson (Texas), who leads the Longhorns with 128 tackles. Joining Johnson on the linebacker corps is Matt Grootegoed (USC) and A.J. Hawk (Ohio State).
A talented defensive line is bolstered by four senior standouts - Erasmus James (Wisconsin), David Pollack (Georgia), Shaun Cody (USC) and Marcus Spears (LSU). In the defensive secondary, seniors Carlos Rogers (Auburn) and Antrel Rolle (Miami) were selected along with juniors Thomas Davis (Georgia) and Ernest Shazor (Michigan).
The punter on the team is sophomore Brandon Fields (Michigan State), who leads the nation with a 47.9 yards per punt average, and the kick returner is sophomore Devin Hester (Miami), who has returned three punts and one kickoff for touchdowns this season.
The Walter Camp All-America team is selected by the head coaches and sports information directors of the 117 Division 1-A football schools and certified by UHY Advisors, a New Haven-based accounting firm. Walter Camp Football Foundation President Kenneth A. Dagliere was pleased with the voting participation.
"We had 83 percent of the 1-A schools participate in this year's voting," Dagliere said. "We are very appreciative of the cooperation of the coaches and SIDs in our effort to honor the most outstanding college players each and every season."
Walter Camp, "The Father of American Football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side. The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team.
Members of the 2004 Walter Camp All-America team will be honored at the organization's national awards banquet on February 12, 2005 at the Yale University Commons in New Haven.
