KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After helping the Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball team to victories against Louisiana Tech and TCU, freshman Alexis Hornbuckle was chosen as the Lady Vol Athlete of the Week in a vote taken by the media relations staff on Tuesday.
In the Lady Vols' most recent pair of triumphs over the Lady Techsters and Horned Frogs, Hornbuckle averaged 16.0 ppg, 5.5 rpg, 5.0 spg and 3.5 apg. Additionally, the Charleston, W.Va., native was extremely accurate with her shooting touch by connecting on 52 percent of her attempts from the field. Her finest performance of the week came in the 82-55 win versus TCU when she totaled 15 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.
Since joining the starting lineup at the point guard position on Dec. 12 against DePaul in place of Loree Moore, who is recovering from a tonsillectomy performed on Dec. 10, Hornbuckle has led UT to a 3-0 record and averaged 15.7 ppg (on 54.5 percent shooting) and 6.3 rpg during the span. On the season, the first-year standout leads the team in assists (24), steals (22) and blocks (nine).
Tennessee (7-2) will be in action again when it hosts No. 2 Stanford (8-0) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Thompson-Boling Arena. The contest will be televised by Comcast Sports Southeast.
