Post-Game Quotes
TENNESSEE HEAD COACH Pat Summitt: "In the first half, I think we did some good things but not a lot of great things. Our ball pressure was good. We had adequate help. We did a nice job of boxing out. In the second half, overall, we did a lot of great things. We did a good job of sharing. We showed good composure. We did a good job of reading the defense and showed patience on offense. We settled in and played well in the half court. I liked the energy we had off the bench. Alexis Hornbuckle did a great job off the bench."
"I thought we passed better today than at any point since practice began. Part of that is who we go up against every day in practice. Nicky Anosike had a bounce pass that was on the money, and she made a great feed to Sidney (Spencer) on a backcourt cut. As we read the defense better, we will get a lot of good looks. Alexis (Hornbuckle) had a pass to Loree (Moore) that was very unselfish. That leads to unselfish basketball."
(on freshman Alexis Hornbuckle) "When I watched her in high school, I thought, 'She's going to be great when she gets to the next level.' She's not your typical freshman. She's serious about the game and focused. She's very coachable. She listens and wants to learn. She will play quality basketball in this program. She thrives on being a great defensive player. In high school, she won four state championships, two each at two different schools. The common denominator was Alexis Hornbuckle. For her, it starts with defense and ends with offense. I liked what I saw today. We may have to remind her at times to look to score. She is a natural at point guard. She's a great combo guard. As she starts her career and unveils her game, she is committed at both ends of the court. She will step up and be a scorer."
(on freshmen Alex Fuller, Candace Parker, and Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood out with injuries) "'Rehab Row' is getting better. They're doing great and working hard. Candace Parker is ahead of schedule. Alex Fuller is out for the year. Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood has had some problems, and we'll re-evaluate."
(on performance of Shyra Ely) "Shyra is playing on the perimeter and adjusting day-to-day. At this point, her offense is better than her defense. She's gaining more offense in her outside shooting. She will be tough to guard for a lot of teams."
TENNESSEE SENIOR FORWARD Shyra Ely:
"I think I can help us. I devoted a lot of time (to her offensive game) this summer, and it paid off. I feel good about my 15-footer. I missed five shots in a row in the first half, but I'm going to take that shot if they gave it to me."
(on the freshmen) "It's like we merged two teams. They are very talented. Alexis (Hornbuckle) did an awesome job. I thought she should have been the player of the game."
TENNESSEE FRESHMAN GUARD Alexis Hornbuckle: (on first collegiate game)
"The tempo is faster than I expected. I get that from practicing against Loree (Moore) every day though. I just wanted to come out and play my game. I'm a defensive player first then I want to get my players open and get to my spot."
TENNESSEE SENIOR GUARD Loree Moore:
"The knee feels great. I was excited to play again. It was my first game since January 24 (when she went down with a season-ending knee injury against Duke in Durham). I was pleased with how I played."
CARSON-NEWMAN HEAD COACH DEAN WALSH:
"I think our kids competed extremely well today. They have no reason to hang their heads. We did not want to be intimidated by the setting. I think we came in here and competed. If we play the rest of the season like we played the first 15 minutes, we should have a good year."
(on the opening 15 minutes) "We were rebounding well and our execution was good. I was really impressed with our aggressiveness."
CARSON-NEWMAN FRESHMAN FORWARD BROOKE JOHNSON:
"This was an opportunity of a lifetime, and I think we came in here and represented ourselves well."
CARSON-NEWMAN SOPHOMORE FORWARD KALA GREEN:
"There were a lot of early butterflies, I mean we were playing Tennessee. I was amazed with how vocal and supportive the crowd is here."
