The annual Tennessee-Vanderbilt game has seen some special performances from young men wearing the orange and white, whether the game is played in Nashville at Vanderbilt Stadium or The Coliseum, or in Knoxville. More often than not, the weather is usually a bit iffy, with shadows covering the field in the early afternoon and winter looking to be imminent.
On the field, former Vol wide receiver Terence Cleveland and quarterback Daryl Dickey made their mark on the series in the 1980s.
Cleveland, who came to the Vols from Sweetwater and wore No. 4, had solid games against Vanderbilt in 1986 and 1987, with a 38-yard TD reception from Jeff Francis in the 1986 game at Vanderbilt Stadium. He added a 10-yard TD pass from Francis in the Vols' 38-36 win at Neyland Stadium in 1987. That was the game in which the Vols trailed 28-3 in the second quarter, but somehow found a way to win.
In the 1986 season, his first as a Vol, Cleveland caught 22 passes for 364 yards and three scores. The next season, he had 23 catches for 417 yards and five scores. He had the game-winning catch in the 1987 Kentucky game.
Daryl Dickey, who wore No. 11, came off the planks in the final stages of the 1985 Alabama game when Tony Robinson was injured and the Vols held on for a 16-14 victory over the Crimson Tide. What followed was the stuff of which dreams are made. Tennessee won the SEC title, followed by the never-to-be-forgotten Sugar Bowl decision over Miami.
After a 6-6 tie against Georgia Tech the week after the Alabama game, Dickey led the Vols to victories over Rutgers, Memphis State, Mississippi, Kentucky and Vanderbilt, leading the 30-0 triumph over the Commodores that clinched the SEC title for the Vols. He threw three TD passes and was named the SEC's offensive player of the week. He capped his Vol career with an MVP performance against the favored Hurricanes.
Cleveland is in pharmaceutical sales for UCB Pharma, Inc., in Knoxville and is an analyst on the Comcast delayed broadcasts of Tennessee football games. Dickey is on the coaching staff at Florida State.
