THE GAME
With a 105-47 win over Carson-Newman now in the rearview mirror, the Lady Vols return to action on Sunday, Nov. 14,with a 3 p.m. exhibition contest versus the West Coast All-Stars at Thompson-Boling Arena. The game is Tennessee's final tuneup before kicking off the regular-season slate at UT Chattanooga on Friday, Nov. 19.
The West Coast All-Stars come to Knoxville with an 0-4 record at the time of publication, having fallen at the hands of UNLV, Texas Tech, New Mexico, and Kentucky, prior to a Saturday evening contest with UCLA. The West Coast All- Stars are coached by Jerry Gatewood, father of Lady Vol freshman Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood.
Last season, Tennessee defeated the West Coast All- Stars 86-57 in an exhibition match-up.
| LADY VOL COACHING STAFF Pat Summitt enters her 31st year as head coach of the Lady Vols. Her overall career record stands at 852 wins and 167 losses, and she has led UT to six national championships. | TENNESSEE LADY VOL TIDBITS The Lady Vols were picked as the preseason No. 1 team in the ESPN/USA Today Coaches' Poll, as well as the Associated Press Poll...Legendary Head Coach Pat Summitt needs just 28 wins to become the NCAA's all-time winningest coach, passing Dean Smith...The exhibition victories, however, will not count in her won-lost totals...Tennessee has scored 11-consecutive victories against exhibition opponents...The streak began with a 100- 60 dismantling of the Visby Ladies of Sweden on Nov. 8, 1998...Since the structure debuted in the1987-88 season, UT has posted a 22-2 record in exhibition tilts at the Thompson-Boling Arena...Every Lady Vol 2004-05 non-conference opponent (13 teams) played in the NCAA Tournament last year...In the initial 2004-05 WBCA/Summerville Overall Strength of Schedule, the Tennessee Lady Vols sport the toughest slate in the nation...UT will play five of the top 10 and 11 of the top 30 schools in the nation...Tennessee will open the season Friday, Nov. 19, at UT Chattanooga, a team ranked #31 in the preseason polls. | WEST COAST ALL-STARS TIDBITS Tennessee and the West Coast All-Stars collided in an exhibition match last season with Tennessee prevailing, 86-57, on Nov. 9, 2003...Senior Shyra Ely and former Lady Vol Tasha Butts paced the Orange attack with 15 points each...The Lady Vols led by just six, 36-30, at the half...This season, the West Coast All- Stars arrive at Thompson-Boling Arena with an 0-4 record, after having played UNLV (L, 93-70), New Mexico, (L, 85-55), Texas Tech, (L, 101-52) and Mickie DeMoss' Kentucky Wildcats (L,83- 50 ), prior to Saturday's game with UCLA...The West Coast All- Stars have been out-scored on the season, 362-227... | TENNESSEE LADY VOLS The Lady Vols looked every bit like the No. 1 team in the nation last Sunday, easily defeating the out-matched and out-manned Carson-Newman Lady Eagles, 105-47. Senior Shyra Ely led the way, scoring 20 points to lead five Tennessee players in double figures. The Lady Vols connected on 10 of 18 three-point attempts, led by senior forward Brittany Jackson, who hit 3 of 4 from downtown. Junior Tye'sha Fluker cleaned up the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds, four of the offensive variety. Freshman Alexis Hornbuckle stole the show, scoring 14 points, grabbing seven rebounds and dishing out seven assists in her first game as a Lady Vol. Hornbuckle, Candace Parker and Sa'de Wiley-Gatewood, all tabbed National High School Players of the Year by different organizations, head a recruiting class that is unparalleled in the history of the sport. The top-notch recruiting class will be joining forces with seven returning letterwinners, led by Kodak All-American and first-team All-SEC honoree Shyra Ely, second-team All-SEC member Shanna Zolman and starting point guard Loree Moore, who returns fully recovered after suffering a season-ending knee injury last January, setting high expectations for this year's edition of the Lady Vols. The 2003-04 Lady Vols finished with a 31-4 overall mark en route to the program's 15th appearance in the NCAA Final Four and second-consecutive national championship game. | WEST COAST ALL-STARS The West Coast All-Stars are a team comprised of former college athletes from around the country who travel the nation playing exhibitions. Head Coach Jerry Gatewood selects his traveling squad from tryouts at the beginning of each year. This season, 32 players tried out, with Gatewood selecting 12 players to join the squad. Here is a breakdown of who some of these athletes are: Guard Elana Adams played two seasons at UNLV and still holds the school record for 3-pt. field goals attempted in a game with 14 (at Hawaii, 3/11/97)...Guard Candace Baldwin was an honorable mention All-American at Dixie State Junior College before transferring to TCU, where she averaged 6.0 points per game in 64 contests with the Lady Frogs...LaShaunda Fowler was a two-sport standout at Cal State Northridge, where she won nine individual Big Sky Track and Field titles and still ranks third all-time on the basketball team with 198 steals...Chelsea Cooper played two seasons at Long Beach State, averaging just over three points per game.. Mauri Horton had the eighth-highest single season 3-pt.shooting percentage at Rutgers, connecting on 60-of-174 (.345) in 2001-02... ReShaunda Richardson, a 2001 graduate of Utah, played two seasons with the WNBA's Portland Fire. |
