Tennessee plays host to Georgia to open its 2004 Southeastern Conference schedule Wednesday (7:30 p.m.) at Thompson-Boling Arena. The two teams split the season series a year ago.
1. With SEC play now getting under way, have there been any major surprises among the league's members as far as preseason expectations are concerned?
A: "Our league has surprised a lot of people. Right now we're behind only the ACC as far as RPI is concerned. Mississippi State and Vanderbilt are still undefeated. Kentucky is always going to be up there, and at Florida they do a great job. There are other good teams in our division. And anything can happen in the Western division. You better be ready any time you go out to play in the SEC."
2. In assessing the last two months of Vols basketball, how far has the team progressed as you prepare for the start Wednesday of SEC competition?
A: "In the UMass game, I was pleased overall from the defensive end in that we paid attention to details. We hope to keep working and become a good defensive team. Of course, we have work to do everywhere."
3. Where specifically do the Vols need to show improvement in order to play competitively in the SEC?
A: "We need to pay attention to scouting reports and game-time details. Basically, it boils down to the defensive end. Boxing out and nearly everything we need to do starts at the defensive end and doing things right from that standpoint."
4. What did Georgia's upset of Georgia Tech Saturday tell you about the Bulldogs, the Vols' opponent Wednesday (7:30E) at Thompson-Boling Arena?
A: "Georgia is a very good team, hard to beat. They are versatile. For instance, Rashad Wright, who has been a point guard, is taking more shots. Damien Wilkins and Chris Daniels can play all over the floor. They don't have the huge guy, 6-10 or 6-ll inside, but they play well from all over the floor."
