When Memphis opthamologist Dr. David Irvine came to Neyland Stadium today, he left with more than he bargained for. Not only did he see the Vols defeat Fresno State in the 2003 home opener, he also became the first of seven lucky fans to be named "The Vol Fan of the Game," as part of the Athletic Department's " Year of the Volunteer Fan." Dr. Irvine was selected at Gate 17 at 1:43 p.m. and was presented with a variety of gifts as part of the promotion. Assistant Athletics Director for Marketing Chip Bryant made the presentation underneath the west stands. He received a 60-inch, High Definition Projection Philips wide screen television, a $250 Big Orange checking account from First Tennessee Bank, and $250 in gift certificates from Bread Box, Goody's, Kroger, and World Travel. A 1982 UT grad in business who also graduated from the UT Medical School in Memphis, Irvine said he was "surprised and shocked" to be selected. "We always get here early to see the band and the pre-game," he said. "Since I just ordered a satellite system, I had been looking to buy a wide screen television." He was accompanied by his sons, Will, John, and Andrew, and their friend, Russell Garner. The grand prize winner will be selected at the Vanderbilt game and will receive a Sea Ray 185 Bow Rider, a Toyota Tundra truck courtesy of Volunteer Toyota Dealers, two season tickets to all UT athletic events for the 2004 season, $250 in gift certificates from each sponsor, and the opportunity to run through the "T." The selection process was overseen by the Knoxville accounting firm of Van Elkins and Associates, CPAs. | ||
