On Friday, Aug.15, 2003, the Tennessee Lady Volunteers claimed their first victory in the Greek International Tournament defeating Romania, 88-74, at the Dimotiko Athlitko Gym in Glyfada, Greece. With the win, UT is now 2-2 on their European tour and 1-1 in tournament play.
After scoring on the opening tip, as Shyra Ely flew to the basket with just two seconds gone in the contest, the Lady Vols went almost four minutes before scoring its next basket. Romania would go on a run to take a 10-2 lead. Back-to-back Brittany Jackson three-pointers with 5:05 and 4:30 on the clock drew UT to within one point, 11-12. A Jackson lay-up bucket at 2:13 put the Lady Vols ahead for good, 17-16 as the team would not trail again in the game. Tennessee's 14-0 run to close out the first quarter gave the Lady Vols a 29-16 lead at the break
UT opened up the second quarter with three-pointers by Tasha Butts, Shanna Zolman and Jackson to double their lead, 40-20, with 4:15 to play. Romania regrouped and dashed off 12 points over the next 2:48 to trail 51-32 at the half. In the first half, the Lady Vols shot a sizzling 63 percent from the floor while out-rebounding Romania 20-12, in perhaps their best outing on the trip.
After halftime, Romania's Florina Pascalau came out scoring with her team's first five points of the quarter to shave UT's lead to 59-39 with 5:46 to play. Three consecutive buckets by junior Shyra Ely, including two put backs, extended UT's lead to 65-41. UT then stymied Romania in the final 3:30 of the quarter, allowing just four points as UT led after the third period, 71-45.
In the final stanza, Ely picked up where she left off scoring seven consecutive points for UT extending the Lady Vols' lead to 78-49 with seven minutes to play. Tennessee led by as many as 29 points in the final period before Romania buckled down. For three minutes and twenty seconds, the Lady Vols went cold as Romania drew to within 15 points, 80-65, when game coach Holly Warlick signaled the timeout with four minutes to play. The Orange and White responded with a run of its own, as Butts sunk a pair of free throws and Jackson scored a deep three-ball off a Davis steal, pushing the margin to 21-point lead, as the Lady Vols cruised to an 88-74 victory.
Jackson missed just one shot on the night en route to her 24-point, five three-pointer performance. Davis tallied 16 points, while Ely scored 15 and grabbed 10 boards. McDaniel also chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds. Jackson and McDaniel's strong showings were notable, as each was blanked in Thursday's loss to the Bulgarian National team.
The Lady Vols will conclude their European trip on Sat., Aug. 16, when they face the Greek National Team, which defeated UT 85-79 in opening-round action on Tuesday.
