EVANSVILLE, Ind. - University of Tennessee senior Tammy Encina, teamed with former Lady Vol standout Alison Ojeda, claimed the doubles crown at a recent USTA $10,000 tournament stop in Evansville Ind., on July 27. The duo earned the title by downing former Florida players Stephanie Hazlett and Julia Scaringe in three sets 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, in the championship match.
The toughest test of the tourney for Encina and Ojeda may have actually come in the first round, when they defeated the No. 3 seed pair of Tomoko Taira and Mayumi Yamamoto from Japan, 6-7(4), 7-6(5), 6-3. In the second round, the Lady Vol tandem dominated Saras Arasu and Kristin Cargill, 6-2, 6-2, before cruising by Audra Falk and Aleke Tsoubanos, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the final.
Encina and Ojeda will next compete at a USTA $50,000 circuit tournament, for which they have qualified, in Lousiville, Ky., from July 28-Aug. 3.
Last season as a junior, Encina earned the first All-America honors of her career by advancing to the round of 16 at the 2003 NCAA Singles Tournament. She finished the year with a singles record of 26-15 in her first season of NCAA Division I play after transferring from Division II Cal State L.A. Meanwhile, Ojeda, who compiled a singles record of 102-68 and a doubles record of 105-45 with UT from 1998-2002, is now an assistant coach at Texas A&M.
