Tennessee head coach Rod Delmonico announced that Chase Headley, a third baseman from University of the Pacific in Stockton, Calif., has transferred to the university and will play next season. Headley brings the total of newcomers to 9 for the 2004 season.
"We are extremely excited about getting Chase," said Delmonico. "He is an excellent hitter and fielder who has a tremendous upside that could make him an early round draft pick by the time his career is over. Along with Chris Kemp, I think we have added some potent hitters to the middle of our line up."
The 6-1, 195-pound sophomore switch-hitter from Fountain, Colo., started 54 games while batting .330 with three home runs and 26 RBI. He also collected 13 doubles and two triples with 36 runs scored. He led the Tigers with 64 hits while also being patient at the plate, drawing 39 walks and posting a .453 on-base percentage for Pacific which finished 27-27 in the Big West Conference.

Five Vols Heading Off to Summer League Teams
University of Tennessee baseball players, Rob Fitzgerald, Alex Suarez, Brian Cleveland, Nick Crowe and Scot Drucker are heading off to play summer baseball at four collegiate summer baseball leagues across the nation.
Three leagues get underway next week, beginning with the Alaska Baseball League opening on June 9, the Great Lakes League starting the 12th and the Cape Cod League opening on June 13. The Northwoods League started Monday.
Fitzgerald, a sophomore right-handed pitcher and utility player, heads back to North Ohio in the Great Lakes League for his second season. Northern Ohio won the league title last year with a 34-10 record.
Suarez, a sophomore outfielder, will play in the prestigious Cape Cod League with the Cotuit Kettleers in Cotuit, Mass. Cotuit won the Western Division losing the semifinals of the playoffs in 2002.
Infielders Cleveland and Crowe travel to Alaska to play for the Anchorage Bucs. Crowe, a sophomore, will see time behind the plate as catcher, while Cleveland, a junior, is penciled in at shortstop.
Drucker, a redshirt right handed pitcher, goes north to play with the Thunder Bay Bordercats in the Northwoods League.
The top two teams in the Alaska Baseball League advance to the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., Aug. 2-16. Both the Cape Cod and Great Lakes Leagues play 44-game schedules, while the Northwoods League has a 64-game slate with playoffs determining league champions.
