NCAA Singles Championships Begin Wednesday

ATHENS, Ga. -- The draw has been announced for the NCAA Division I Men's Singles Championships, and Tennessee junior Simon Rea will face Illinois junior Brian Wilson in first round competition Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. at UGA's Henry Feild Stadium. The match will be mark the first time the two players have met.
"Simon is itching to go," Tennessee associate head coach Chris Mahony said. "He's gotten a little bit sharper each day he's been down here in Athens. Simon's a great competitor so he's looking forward to the opportunity and he'll be ready to play."
The winner of Wednesday's first round contest will face the either Oscar Chow of Columbia or Chris Lam of UCLA on Thursday.
Rea is not seeded for the tournament, but in a testament to the strength of the conference, eight of the 16 seeded players are from the SEC. Wilson is seeded, but seeds nine-through 16 are not assigned an exact position.
Vanderbilt junior Bobby Reynolds is the top-seeded player in the singles draw. Reynolds was named the 2003 SEC Player of the Year and has compiled an overall record of 43-6.
Illinois captured the NCAA Team Championship Tuesday, posting a 4-3 victory over No. 7-seeded Vanderbilt. The win capped of an undefeated season for Illinois, making it only the fourth program to accomplish such a feat.
