Former University of Tennessee Lady Vol basketball player Kara Lawson has been selected as one of four student-athletes in the country to receive a National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Directors' Cup Postgraduate Scholarship as announced on Tuesday. The winners, selected from 220 nominees spanning NCAA Divisions I, II, and III, as well as the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), will each receive a $5,000 grant to be utilized towards their postgraduate studies.
Lawson, a 2003 Kodak All-America as well as a four-time first-team All-Southeastern Conference performer, helped lead the Lady Vols to a record 10th NCAA Championship Game, a 33-5 mark and UT's unprecedented sixth-straight SEC title, while completing her tenure in the Orange and White as the program's all-time leader in three-pointers made (256) and free-throw shooting percentage (.847).
In the classroom, the finance major posted a 3.77 grade point average and was honored as the recipient of the SEC's Postgraduate Award. The University of Tennessee also bestowed upon Lawson the highest honor available to an undergraduate by selecting her as a UT "Torchbearer."
To be eligible for the NACDA award, a student-athlete is required to have a minimum GPA of 3.0 (on a 4.0 scale); have been awarded athletic honors along the lines of all-conference or all-America in the sport in which they are nominated; be in their final year of eligibility; and have demonstrated leadership qualities both on the school and community level.
