KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- In a rematch of last season's tournament final, Tennessee plays Auburn in the first round of the 2003 SEC Tournament Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss. The Volunteers fell to the Tigers 5-2 in their only 2003 regular-season meeting March 9, in Knoxville.
"Auburn is a strong team that has a lot of depth," Tennessee head coach Michael Fancutt said. "They beat us earlier this year, so it's going to take a big effort by our guys in the SEC Tournament (to pull off the win)."
Tennessee (9-11, 2-9 SEC) will play as the No. 11 seed, while Auburn (14-8, 5-6 SEC) is seeded No. 6.
"We look forward to Simon Rea's match against Auburn's Rameez Junaid, which will be a clash between two of the top players in the country," Fancutt said.
Junaid, currently listed at No. 11 in the ITA singles rankings, is Auburn's highest-ranked player. Rea, ranked No. 25, lost to Junaid earlier this season in a hard-fought three-set contest. Since that rare defeat, Rea has gone 6-2 in singles matches.
The winner of Thursday's matchup will face 2003 SEC Western Division Champion and No. 3 seed Ole Miss Friday at 2 p.m.
