The University of Tennessee women's golf team, ranked 10th in the GolfWeek/Sagarin Performance Index Rankings, continues its spring season this weekend when it travels to Greensboro, N.C., to participate in the Bryan National Intercollegiate. The Lady Vols tee off on Friday at 8:30 a.m. The Big Orange continues the tournament Saturday with tee times dependent on second-round finishes. UT then concludes the event Sunday with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. The Bryan Park golf course is a par-72, 5,800-yard layout.
"The field at the Bryan Intercollegiate is going to be very tough." Head Coach Judi Pavon said. "This will be the first time this spring that we will see Duke and Auburn. We are playing well and hope to continue that play through the weekend. This will be an important event for all of our players, individually, because of the quality of the field as it will be the last time we see SEC teams before the SEC Championships in April."
Leading the way for UT this tourney is Violeta Retamoza (Aguascalientes, Mexico). The freshman is coming off her fourth top-five finish of the season after tying for second with a 217 (73-72-72) at the SunTrust Lady Gator. Joining Retamoza as members of the Lady Vol fivesome are junior Tai Perry (Unionville, Pa.), team captain Jessica Shepley (Oakville, Ontario, Canada), junior Mary Jan Fernandez (Henderson, Nev.) and rookie Golda Johansson (Lund, Sweden).
Perry bettered her previous career-best tournament by five strokes with a seventh-place 219 (69-80-70) at the Lady Gator as well as placed a career-high seventh-place. She also fired a career-low 69 in the first round of the Lady Gator. Shepley garnered her seventh-straight top-15 finish at the Lady Gator with an eighth-place 220 (72-75-73). The sophomore stands just three tournaments shy of former Lady Vol Abby Pearson's program standard set in her initial 10 tourneys. Fernandez posted a 14th-place tying 224 (75-76-73), while Johansson carded a 241 (79-82-80) to tie for 69th-place.
After the Bryan National, the spring season continues in West Lafayette, Ind., April 12-13, when the Lady Vols compete in the Lady Boilermaker Invitational.
