KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released the season's first computerized version of the Omni Hotels/ITA Collegiate Tennis Rankings Wednesday. Tennessee (9-6, 2-4 SEC) garnered a No. 33 national ranking.
The Vol netters previously held a No. 26 ranking in the poll that had been administered by committee vote. The computer rankings are administered in an entirely different method than the committee poll that has been published each of the previous seven weeks. Each week the computer determines what a team has done up to that point in the entire season, and teams are given credit based on their opponents' rankings at the time the two teams competed.
So far this season, the Volunteers have recorded wins over two teams currently ranked in the top 25 (No. 15 Alabama and No. 25 Arkansas).
All 12 SEC teams are listed in the top 50, the strongest showing of any conference in the nation. Two SEC programs garnered top 10 rankings, with Florida (15-2, 6-0 SEC) listed as No. 2 in the nation and Mississippi (11-2, 3-1 SEC) coming in at No. 6.
The computerized team rankings will be updated March 26. Individual singles and doubles rankings will also be updated at that time.
MIAMI (FLA.) NEXT OPPONENT FOR VOL NETTERS
The No. 22-ranked Miami Hurricanes (9-5) will play host to Tennessee Sunday, March 23, in Coral Gables, Fla. The contest will mark the second match the Vols will play on their spring break trip to the Sunshine State. Tennessee defeated Georgia Southern 4-3 in Boca Raton, Fla., Tuesday.
The Hurricanes boast the nation's No. 18-ranked collegiate singles player in sophomore Todd Widom. Also ranked for Miami is the doubles team of Colin Purcell and Andrew Golub, currently listed as the nation's No. 34-ranked doubles pairing.
