White Represents Tennessee at SEC Legends Dinner
December 04, 2003 | Football
Former Tennessee great Reggie White will be the Vols' representative at Friday's Southeastern Conference Legends Dinner Friday at the Hyatt Regency in Atlanta.
The league hosts the annual event that honors a football legend from each school the night before the SEC Championship game.
White, who earned All-America honors as a senior in 1983, was selected to the College Football Hall of Fame in 2002. He still holds Tennessee's all-time quarterback sacks record with 32 and holds the school's single-season mark with 15 in 1983.
White was named the SEC Player of the Year as well as a consensus All-SEC and All-America following his senior campaign. He was named the Atlanta Touchdown Club's Player of the Year, Birmingham Touchdown Club's Outstanding Lineman and Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club's Outstanding Senior.
White went on to a spectacular professional career, retiring in 2000 as the NFL's all-time sack leader with 198.
Selected as the fourth pick in the 1984 NFL Supplemental Draft by the Philadelphia Eagles, White played two seasons in the USFL with the Memphis Showboats (1984-85) before having his stellar 16-year NFL career with the Eagles (1985-92), Green Bay Packers (1993-1998) and Carolina Panthers (2000).
White was named the NFL's Defensive Player of the Year in 1987 and helped lead the Packers to the 1997 Super Bowl title. White set a Super Bowl record with three sacks in Green Bay's 35-21 victory over New England.
The SEC began the Legends Dinner in 1994 to celebrate the league's rich football history. Tennessee honorees have been Bob Johnson (1994), Doug Atkins (1995), Condredge Holloway (1996), John Michels (1997), Richmond Flowers (1998), Steve Kiner (1999), Steve DeLong (2000), Stanley Morgan (2001) and Johnny Majors (2002).
