LADY VOL BASKETBALL OPENS THE SEASON AGAINST CHATTANOOGA

THE GAME
The #3/3 Tennessee Lady Vols open up the 2003-04 season with a match-up against in-state rival Chattanooga (1-0), who opened the season with an 84-71 win over UAB. Tip-off is set for 3 p.m. in Thompson-Boling Arena.
The Lady Vols come into the contest on the heels of a victorious exhibition season in which UT defeated the West Coast All-Stars, 86-57, and knocked off the Athletes In Action, 88-64.
The Lady Mocs dominated the Blazers from the tip as Chattanooga ran its season-opening record to 2-4 under Head Coach Wes Moore
Tennessee holds a 17-6 edge in the series against Chattanooga with the last loss coming on Jan. 26, 1973 by a 58-55 margin.

TENNESSEE LADY VOLUNTEERS
The #3/3 Lady Vols closed out its exhibition slate with an 88-64 triumph over Athletes In Action in front of 3,813 fans in Thompson-Boling Arena on Tuesday, Nov. 18. Tennessee opened up a 45-38 halftime lead over AIA, before going on an outstanding 26-0 run with 15 minutes to play to move to 26-4 all-time in exhibition play.
Junior Shyra Ely responded from a tough first half by finishing the game with a double-double effort with 13 points and 10 boards as well as two assists, a block and a steal in 23 minutes of action. The Indianapolis, Ind., native also connected at a .500 clip from the field for the second consecutive contest.
Senior forward Courtney McDaniel, senior center Ashley Robinson and sophomore guard Shanna Zolman rounded out the rest of UT's double-digit performers. McDaniel returned to "Minute Maid" form with 12 points, two boards, a helper and a steal in 13 minutes, while Robinson and Zolman each put up a game-high 15 points. Robinson also pulled down four rebounds while knocking down 77.8 percent of her shots. Zolman dished out four assists en route to a 66.7 percent shooting night.
Overall, Tennessee out-shot the Athletes In Action 51.5 percent to 34.3 percent. AIA, however, cleaned the glass as the Lady Vols were outrebounded 43-39 in the contest.
LADY VOL COACHING STAFF
Pat Summitt is in her 30th year as head coach of the Lady Vols. Her overall career record stands at 821 wins and 163 losses, and she has led UT to six national championships. Summitt is assisted by Holly Warlick, Nikki Caldwell and Greg Brown.
TENNESSEE LADY VOL TIDBITS
Tennessee has posted 11 consecutive wins over Chattanooga, a streak that began on Feb. 24, 1973 with a 55-51 victory in a battle held at East Tennessee State...UT holds an impressive 26-3 record in season openers as well as an identical 26-3 ledger in home lidlifters under Pat Summitt...The Lady Vols have outscored the Lady Mocs 62.8 to 50.8 in their 23-game series with Chattanooga...Six current UT players met the Lady Mocs on the hardwood in the squad's last tilt against UTC on Nov. 16, 2001...Shyra Ely put up 16 points with six rebounds, two assists and two steals while connecting at a 58.3 percent clip in 25 minutes played...Loree Moore finished the contest with 15 points and five steals as well as knocked down 70 percent of her shots from the field...LaToya Davis tallied 12 points in 13 minutes with 60-percent shooting, while Tasha Butts posted eight points with four helpers in 25 minutes...Brittany Jackson turned in a seven-point effort, while Courtney McDaniel grabbed eight boards.
CHATTANOOGA LADY MOCS
The Lady Mocs opened up the 2003-04 season with a dominating 84-71 triumph over the University of Alabama at Birmingham at McKenzie Arena on Friday, Nov. 21. Chattanooga struck out to a 48-31 halftime lead, before holding off a comeback attempt by the Blazers to take a 15-13 series advantage over UAB.
Senior Katie Galloway paced the Lady Mocs with 19 points and three steals in 26 minutes while connecting at a 58.3 percent clip from the field. Overall, Chattanooga enjoyed six double-digit performances, including 10 boards from junior Shamya Sermons. Senior Miranda Warfield notched 16 points and two assists in 26 minutes and hit 87.5 percent of her field goals, while sophomore Katasha Brown tallied 13 points and a block. Sophomore Tiffani Roberson accumulated 11 points, three rebounds and two steals in 20 minutes, while senior Heather McDivitt rounded out UTC's double-digit performers with 10 points, three boards, three helpers and two steals in 28 minutes.
As a team, Chattanooga out-shot UAB 57.7 percent to 45.2 percent, while the Blazers outrebounded the Lady Mocs 33-31. Despite that discrepancy, UTC went to the line 10 more times than UAB and connected on 68 percent of its 25 charity tosses.
LADY MOC COACHING STAFF
The Lady Mocs are coached by Wes Moore and is assisted by Angela Crosby, Kellie Harper, Jon Harper and Jennifer Wilson. Moore holds a 310-98 career record in 15 years as a head coach and is 110-42 in his six years at the helm of UTC.
CHATTANOOGA LADY MOC TIDBITS
According to the NCAA, Moore is the only women's head coach in NCAA history to take three different teams to a national tournament at all three NCAA levels...Moore coached Maryville College to five NCAA Division III national tournaments, including a Division III Sweet 16...He later led Francis Marion to the NCAA Division II national tourney...Moore also nurtured the Lady Mocs into the NCAA Tournament in three consecutive seasons...Chattanooga believes in harvesting homegrown talent as evidence by the eight Volunteer State natives on the Lady Moc roster...Junior guard Holly Talley and Lady Vol Brittany Jackson should know each other well as each prepped at Bradley Central H.S. in Cleveland, Tenn....Current assistant coach Kellie Harper, the former Kellie Jean Jolly, was a standout for the Lady Vols from 1995-99...Harper earned honorable mention All-America status her senior season after averaging 7.5 ppg and 4.1 apg.
