Knoxville, Tenn. The White team scored early and used a suffocating bullpen to defeat the Orange team 4-2 in the annual Orange-White game at Lindsey Nelson Stadium, marking the end of fall practice.
Third baseman Kyle Norrid went 3-for-4 with three RBI to pace the White squad. He collected an RBI single in the first and added a two-run single in the second as the White extended its lead to 4-1.
Newcomer Eli Iorg had three hits and Michael Rivera had two as the White squad out hit the Orange team 11-5. Alex Suarez and Chad LeGate each doubled, while Chris Kemp added an safety for the White.
Second baseman Rob Fitzgerald led the Orange with two hits and tripled home a run in the first as the Orange team took a quick 1-0 lead off winning pitcher Derek Tharpe. Luke Hochevar pitched the ninth for the save.
Todd Martin drove in the second Orange run in the fourth, while Nick Crowe and Brian Cleveland each had hits.
Ben Riley took the loss in 2 2/3 innings of work, allowing all four runs on six hits.
Brandon Crowe, Dusty Johnson, Sean Watson and Chris Howell kept the White team at bay by scattering five hits over the final 5 1/3 innings. But it wouldn't be enough as Scot Drucker, Craig Cobb, Trey Bridges, Beau Massey and Hochevar combined to toss five scoreless innings in holding back the Orange team.
The Vols open the 2004 season with a three-game series against the Morehead State Golden Eagles, Feb. 13-15.
