COSTA MESA, Calif. -- The University of Tennessee men's tennis team opened up its fall season with two players, junior Simon Rea, and sophomore Mark Dietrich, taking part in the qualifying rounds of the USTA Futures event in Costa Mesa, Calif.
Dietrich looked strong through the first three qualifying rounds this weekend, dispatching Bobby Auld 6-2, 3-6, 7-5 in the first round. Dietrich then defeated Adam Loucks 7-6, 6-3 in his second-round match, and went on to outlast Brian Battistone 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the third round.
In Monday's final round of qualifying, Dietrich faced off against Danny Westerman, a University of Wisconsin senior. The momentum Dietrich had ridden through his first three qualifying wins finally came to a halt as he was outdueled 6-7, 7-5, 7-5.
Dietrich was the second Vol to fall against Westerman, as Friday the 13th proved to be unlucky for Simon Rea, who lost to the experienced Badger 4-6, 7-6, 6-3 in the first round of qualifying.
The Vol netters' next action will come at the MTSU Ranked Invitational which will take place in Murfreesboro, Tenn., Sept. 20-22.
