The Tennessee golf team will be competing in the 2002 Atlanta Intercollegiate from May 9-10 at Eagles Landing Country Club in Stockbridge, Ga.
This tournament will be a tune-up for the eighth-ranked Vols before they compete in next week's NCAA East Regional, from May 16-18. This marks the third year in a row that UT has been selected to compete in an NCAA regional.
Head coach Jim Kelson is looking forward to seeing his Vols compete this week before the start of regional play.
"I see this tournament as a good tune-up for the East Regional next week," Kelson said. "It has been a while since we last played and I am looking forward to playing on a great golf course against a fine field. Hopefully we can get back to playing good golf after this time off."
The field for this tournament will include five teams ranked in the Golfweek Top 25. Among those in the top 25 include No. 4 Florida, No. 8 Tennessee, No. 10 Auburn, No. 12 Georgia and No. 16 Augusta State. The rest of the field includes Duke, East Tennessee State, Florida State, Kentucky, Mississippi State, North Florida, UAB and host Georgia State.
Leading the Vols into this tournament will be junior Andrew Pratt. Pratt was recently named to the second team All SEC. He has competed in every tournament for the Vols and has a stroke average of 73 with 11 rounds of par or better. Freshman Ross McGowan will also be competing. McGowan has a stroke average of 72.25. Other Vols competing include senior Andrew Black (73.06), senior Jimmy White (75.22) and junior Ian Parnaby (73.56).
Tennessee competed in this tournament last year, finishing ninth.
