OAK RIDGE, Tenn.
The 2001-02 season for the Lady Vol rowing team came to a close on Sunday at the 2002 Lexus Central/Southern Sprints. All of the racing took place over a 2,000m course on Melton Hill Lake in Oak Ridge. Only one UT shell qualified for the Grand Finals, resulting in Tennessee's lone point and put head coach Lisa Glenn's squad in a three-team tie for 12th place.
The only Orange and White boat to accumulate any points was the 2nd Varsity 4+. That shell was comprised of Jovanna Vick (coxswain), Marissa Allen, Holly McDaniel, Hilary Gilmore and Heather Marshall, and it finished fifth in the Grand Finals of its event at a time of 7:56.2. The fifth-place showing resulted in UT obtaining one point in the overall standings. Ohio State won the event in 7:35.5
The next highest finish for the Big Orange was an eighth-place showing by the 2nd Varsity 8+. Tennessee's nine-person grouping of Shannon McMahon (cox.), Davida Lopez, Claire Newton, Kelly Kraiss, Grace Harrington, Ginny Bradley, Lindsay Sagar, Mary Gruzalski and Mary Beth Lewis finished the course in 6:58.8 to finish second in the Petite Finals. Clemson claimed the Petite Finals crown in 6:54.2, while Ohio State was the overall winner.
In the Petite Finals of the Varsity 4+ event, Tennessee placed third but ninth overall. That crew consisted of Lizzie Brown (cox.), Claire Hennesy, McKenzie Craig, Michelle Higdon and Elizabeth Freeman, and they finished the water track in 8:09.4. Michigan was the Varsity 4+ champion.
The last race of the season for the Lady Vols was the Petite Finals of the Varsity 8+ and, unfortunately, the season didn't end as UT would have wanted. The Big Orange tandem of Erin Artz, Chelsea Pemberton, Kacey Montgomery, Kaitlin Bargreen, Kay Logan, Dana Forbes, Sally BeVille, Amy McIntosh and Nicole Bold placed sixth (12th overall) at a clip of 6:56.4. Due to an injury, Tennessee's Novice 8+ only competed in the heats yesterday and did not qualify for any of the finals.
Although the 2001-02 Tennessee Lady Vol rowing season comes to a close, it was not without highlights as the team captured the Club 8+ crown at the Head of the Charles and accomplished the same feat the next week at the Head of the Schuylkill. UT will lose four seniors from this year's squad, but the freshmen are ready to come in and take their place with the hopes of putting Tennessee in the national rankings next year.
