We need to go down and prove ourselves." | The Tennessee men's golf team will be competing in the 2002 NCAA East Regional. The tournament will be hosted by Georgia Tech at Ansley Golf Club's Settindown Creek. UT will be the third seed. This marks the third year in a row that the 10-ranked Vols have been selected to compete in a regional, and the 10th time overall since regional play began. Tennessee's highest regional finish came in 1995 and 1997 when the Vols finished tied for seventh. The Vols will enter the tournament being led by SEC Freshman of the Year David Skinns. Junior Andrew Pratt, an All SEC second team selection will also be competing. Those teams include No. 1 Georgia Tech, No. 2 Clemson, No. 3 Wake Forest, No. 4 and defending NCAA Champion Florida, No. 9 Auburn, No. 10 Tennessee, No. 11 Georgia and No. 19 Augusta State. UT will enter the tournament with a record of 109-40 (.732) and an SEC record of 35-20 (.636). The Vols 109 wins is the most by a Volunteer golf team since the 1993 squad recorded 122. The 35 SEC wins is the most by a UT golf team since that same 93 squad recorded 38 wins. To qualify for the championships, a team must be in the 10 top. An individual may qualify if his team is not among the 10 teams qualified to compete in the championships. Vol Competitors | Senior from Chattanooga, Tenn. (East Ridge HS). Has competed in every tournament for UT this season and finished in the top 10 twice. His highest finish was fourth at the Rice Intercollegiate where he fired scores of 74-71-71--216. Also finished sixth at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational with scores of 72-66-69--207. Has 11 rounds of par or better for the season and a stroke average of 73.48. | | Freshman from Cheam Surrey England (Epsom). Competed in five tournaments for the Vols in his first season. Has the second lowest stroke average on the team of 72.13. His highest finish for the year came at the Atlanta Intercollegiate where he led the Vols with a 12th place finish with scores of 77-72-66--215. Through 15 rounds of play, McGowan has eight rounds of par of better. | | Junior from Bartlett, Tenn. (Bartlett HS). Recently voted to the second team All SEC. Has competed in every tournament for UT this season. Pratt has finished 13th twice this season for his highest finishes. He finished tied for 13th at the Rice Intercollegiate with scores of 76-74-72--222 and 13th at the Seminole Intercollegiate with scores of 74-69-78--221. For the season he has recorded 11 rounds of par or better and has a stroke average of 73.45. | | Senior from Chattanooga, Tenn. (The Baylor School). Has competed in seven events for the Vols. His highest finish came at the Mercedes-Benz Collegiate Championship where he finished tied for eighth with a 75-71-71--217. Has a season stroke average of 75.19 and six rounds of par or better. | | Freshman from Lincoln, England (Lincoln Christ's Hospital School). Recently named the SEC Freshman of the Year, as well as to the first team All SEC. Leads Tennessee in stroke average with a 71.44, rounds of par or better with 16 and top 10 finishes with 6. Claimed top honors at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational with scores of 66-67-70--203, which broke the tournament record for lowest score by an individual. Also has top 10 finishes at the Carpet Capital Collegiate (5th-t), Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions (10th-t), Country Club of Louisiana Intercollegiate (7th-t), Rice Intercollegiate (2nd) and Seminole Intercollegiate (2nd-t). Received SEC Golfer of the Week honors after his performance at the Cleveland Golf/Augusta State Invitational. Is ranked 17th in the nation by Golfweek Magazine. | |
