GAINESVILLE, Fla.
The 10th-rated University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team dropped a 6-1 decision to top-ranked Florida on Friday in Gainesville, Fla. The loss drops UT to 7-2 in Southeastern Conference play and a 16-6 record overall. "Our team competed hard," said co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick. "Florida is an opponent that can make you better just by playing them and they are a team that we could see again in the post season. Now it will be up to the team to get focused for our match on Sunday.
In doubles, Florida struck first as the fifth-ranked gator pairing of Jessica Lehnhoff and Lindsay Dawaff dealt UT's No. 19 Vilmarie Castellvi and Agnes Wiski an 8-3 setback at the No. 1 slot. Tennessee's No. 3 duo of freshmen Ashley Robards and Breanna Kray then fell in an 8-3 decision, yielding the doubles point to UF. Crystal Cleveland and Alison Ojeda took an 8-6 triumph at the No. 2 position after the point had already been clinched.
The Gators extended its lead to 2-0 after second-ranked Lehnhoff downed No. 6 Castellvi in a 6-3, 6-1 decision. The loss snapped Castellvi's 14-match win streak that dated back to Feb. 9. Nineteenth-rated Dawaff then put UF on the brink of victory by upsetting No. 15 Ojeda 7-6, 6-2 on court two. Breanna Kray, playing in her first singles match since injuring her shoulder earlier in the season, dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to Annika Bengtsson in the sixth slot to seal the Lady Vols' fate.
With the match decided, Robards notched UT's lone point and her eighth consecutive singles triumph taking the No. 5 tilt, 3-6, 7-6, 1-0. Cleveland retired from her No. 4 match with No. 94 Gordon and Wiski dropped a 7-5, 6-4 contest to No. 39 Zerene Reyes.
Up next, Tennessee will head to Columbia, S.C. for a match with the 20th-rated Gamecocks at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
