Oxford, Miss. -- The Tennessee Volunteers played for the big inning as they scored four runs in each of the second, third and sixth frames en route to a 14-6 victory over the No. 6 Mississippi Rebels at Swayze Field.
The victory provided Tennessee with its second Southeastern Conference series win of the year, while putting the Volunteers above the .500 mark for the first time at 23-22. They had reached the .500 mark three previous times but could never get that next win until today's triumph.
Brandon Hopkins went 3-for-4 as one of five Vols to collect at least two hits as they pounded out 15. Walter Sevilla and Matt Sternberg each drove in three runs while Jordan Czarniecki added two.
Jeffery Terrell (4-6), who picked up the save in Friday night's 8-5 win, worked 7 2/3 innings for his fourth win. He was touched for five runs on 13 hits as Tennessee improved to 8-12 in the SEC, closing to within two games of the Auburn Tigers for eighth place in the conference standings to reach the tournament.
After taking a 1-0 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly, Tennessee tacked on four runs in each of the second and third innings in grabbing a 9-2 advantage. Czarniecki's two-run triple was the key blow in the second, while two Rebel errors led to four unearned runs in the third as Sevilla's two-run single with the bases loaded capped the inning.
The Vols plated four more runs in the sixth as they extended their lead to 13-3. Sternberg provided the key hit with a two-run double.
Mississippi plated two runs in the second on a two-out two-run single from Burney Hutchinson, before adding another in the third on a Charlie Waite's single that scored Dustin Cliburn who doubled to lead off the inning.
Following Tennessee's run in the top of the eighth on Sternberg's second double, Mississippi tacked on two in the bottom of the inning on a single by Hutchinson and fielders choice cutting the deficit to 14-5. Barry Gunther drove in Bryce Morrison in the ninth for the final Mississippi run.
Hutchinson drove in three, as Waite went 3-for-3 with two doubles and Seth Smith added three hits to pace the Rebels who collected 13.
Pete Montrenes (8-4) was roughed up for nine runs (five earned) on five hits in two-plus innings as he took the loss for the Rebels who fell to 33-11 and 12-8 in the league.
Nick Bradshaw allowed four runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings in relief of Montrenes. Nathan Lyons closed it the final 3 2/3 innings, giving up one unearned on three hits.
The Vols will go for their first conference sweep of the year at 2:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
