Tennessee's No. 38-ranked senior Peter Handoyo was named SEC tennis player of the week Tuesday by the league office after winning both of his singles matches over the weekend against ranked opponents. Both of Handoyo's wins came in the No. 1 spot, where he has amassed a 4-0 record this dual match season. The Indonesia native also remains undefeated overall in 2002, with an 11-0 record.
"I believe this is a well deserved individual honor for Pete," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "I hope he can maintain this level of play for the rest of the season. Pete has always been a great leader. He leads by example, with great on-court performances and hard work."
Handoyo, who won the SEC singles and doubles titles in January, began the week with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Kentucky's no. 4-ranked Jesse Witten in the Wildcat's upset win over the Vols Friday. The two-time All-America and three-time All-SEC performer then finished the weekend with a 6-1, 6-3 singles win over Vanderbilt's No. 35-ranked Bobby Reynolds and an 8-1 doubles win, with partner Mark Dietrich, over the Commodores' Reynolds and Scott Brown in the No. 1 match.
Handoyo currently stands as the third winningest Vol ever, with 128 career singles victories, needing just 13 more to pass Shelby Cannon (1985-88) for second place on the all-time list. Handoyo will have his next shot to add to his total Friday, when the Volunteers travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. for a 1 p.m. showdown with the Crimson Tide.
