Postgame Quotes
NCAA Midwest Regional Semifinals
Tennessee vs. Brigham Young
March 23, 2002
TENNESSEE
Coach Pat Summitt
"First of all, its a win. We just want to survive and advance and we did without consistent play from our go-to players. Our freshmen stepped up. Shyra Ely, Michelle Munoz played well. As I watched the game go on, our freshmen played like they've been here before while our juniors and seniors were tight. Hopefully we can now relax."
(On Shyra Ely): "Our forwards weren't aggressive and didn't post up strong. The one thing Shyra Ely brings to the court is great intensity. She could miss 14 shots in a row and shoot the next shot likes she's made 14 in a row."
(On Courtney McDaniel): "Courtney brings intensity and energy to the basketball team. She's one of our most competitive players. She now thinks she can play at Tennessee, something she didn't always believe. Sometimes it's not the size of the body, it's the size of the heart. Hopefully we can feed off it.
I look at how we won this game - I look at Shyra Ely. Loree Moore had a lot to do with with how we played in transition. Michelle Munoz ... she committed to Tennessee as a sophomore in high school so I've watched her play a lot of basketball. She's a great competitor in pressure situations and she's gotten a lot more minutes since the Mississippi State game (Feb. 14 - 80-78 Tennessee win)."
(On BYU's 3-pt attempts) "It was not my intention to have them shoot that many threes. When we made the decision to press, we gambled and they made a few, but when we had to make a defensive stop, we made them.
(On crowd) "I thought the crowd was good. We hoped the fans would have liked us more but maybe we'll get some more fans Monday. Hats off to the Iowa State fans that came. Hopefully they'll come back Monday and bring a friend."
"We didn't start the game with a lot of intensity and the freshman came in and gave us a lift. We told our freshman at the beginning of the season that we believed in them and they believe in themselves and it showed today. BYU had a great team and we knew that coming in and we respected them a lot. They played with a lot of heart tonight."
"We didn't come out with a lot of intensity and we had to regroup. We knew we had to make a run and stay focused."
(on playing North Carolina or Vanderbilt) "They are both really good teams. North Carolina is a different team than Vanderbilt but either way it will be tough."
"At first we couldn't miss and then in the second half we couldn't make anything. It was so uncharacteristic for our team to miss that many at the free throw line."
" At times it felt like there were six people out there. They had great cuts and great passes."
