Louisville, Ky.-- The fourth-ranked Tennessee tennis team won their first round consolation match Friday night over No. 52 San Diego State 4-2 at the National Team Indoor Championships being held at the Louisville Tennis Club. The Vols (5-1) now own a 2-1 advantage in their series with the Aztecs.
The Vols got back on the winning side of the doubles segment, after dropping the doubles point in two of their last three matches. San Diego State (2-3) struck first, when their second-ranked tandem of Oliver Maiberger and Ryan Redondo downed the Vols' Mark Dietrich and Jacob Olsen 8-4 in the No. 1 match. The senior duo of Mario Toledo and Andy Crews then struck back for the Vols, with an 8-6 win over Felix Hardt and Travis Hasson in the No. 2 match. Tennessee's Adam Carey and Mark Henderson then secured the point for the Big Orange, with an 8-6 victory over Valentino Pest and Gabe Coren in the No. 3 match.
The Tennesse trio of Toledo, Dietrich and Wade Orr would then seal the Vols' fifth victory of the young season, with wins in the singles segment. Toledo, ranked No. 14 nationally, downed Hardt 6-4, 6-4 in the No. 2 match. Orr captured a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 win in his No. 5 match over Ryan Redondo. Before Dietrich, ranked No. 67, secured his thrid straight clinching point for the Vols, with an exciting 3-6, 6-3, 7-6(0) win over Valentino Pest in the No. 3 match.
"You can judge the character of a team by the way they bounce back after a loss," UT head coach Michael Fancutt said. "I believe we showed today that we are a championship caliber team by the way we came back and beat a very strong San Diego State squad. I also want to point out the great job that Mario (Toledo), Mark (Dietrich) and Wade (Orr) did today clinching the singles matches for us."
Also in singles, the Aztecs eleventh-ranked Maiberger toppled Tennessee's Carey 6-4, 6-3 in the No. 1 match. Hasson would give SDSU their second and final point, with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Jake Olsen in the No. 4 match.
The Vols will continue on in the consolation bracket tomorrow, with a 7:30 match against conference foe Kentucky.
