Knoxville, Tenn. - Patrick Hicklen tossed 5 2/3 no-hit innings and Adam Smith slugged his first two career home runs as the Tennessee Volunteers snapped a two-game losing skid with an 11-4 victory over Eastern Michigan at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.
Smith smacked a two-run home run as part of a three-run fifth as Tennessee took a 4-0 lead. He added a solo shot in the seventh to give the Vols an 8-1 advantage.
Smith became the first Vol to hit two home runs in a game since Chris Burke at Florida in March 2001.
Tennessee (4-7), which pounded out 14 hits for the game, got two hits apiece from Smith, Jordan Czarniecki, Hal Bibee, Brandon Hopkins and Walter Sevilla.
The Eagles (1-1) got two home runs from Jesse Cogswell in the seventh that broke up the no-hitter and a two-run blast from Todd Kimling in the ninth. They got their second run on a ground out in the eighth that scored pinch hitter Ben Jones who earlier lined a triple to right.
Hicklen (1-2), who finished with a season-high eight strikeouts, ran out of gas in the sixth as he walked the bases loaded before giving way to Joey Andrews who got Ryan Goleski to line out to third to end the Eagle scoring threat.
Andrews and Justin Reed, who closed the game, combined with Hicklen to punch out 12 batters, one shy of the season-high 13 set in Friday's 5-0 loss to the Eagles.
Tom Gallus (0-1) took the loss as he was tagged for four runs on seven hits in 4 2/3 innings.
Three other Eagle pitchers fared little better as they were roughed up for seven runs on seven hits in 3 1/3 innings.
Leading 1-0, Smith capped a three-run fifth with a two-run blast as the Vols took a 4-0 lead. Nick Crowe scored earlier in the inning on a single by Sevilla.
Back-to-back sacrifice flies from Crowe and Sevilla and an RBI single by Hopkins extended Tennessee's lead to 7-0 in the sixth.
Following Smith's second home run of the game in the seventh, the Vols tacked up three more in the eighth on an error and two groundouts for an 11-2 lead.
