2002 SEC Football All-Freshman Team Announced
Five Tennessee football players earned All-Southeastern Conference honors in the annual voting by the league's head coaches. Tight end Jason Witten along with defensive backs Julian Battle and Rashad Baker earned first-team honors, while linebacker Eddie Moore and offensive tackle Will Ofenheusle were named to the All-SEC's second team. The SEC office conducted the voting and annouced the results today from Birmingham.
Georgia defensive end David Pollack, Vanderbilt running back/return specialist Kwane Doster, Arkansas offensive tackle Shawn Andrews and Georgia coach Mark Richt earned the top Southeastern Conference individual honors in the 2002 coaches' awards voting, conducted by the league's coaches.
Pollack was named the SEC Player of the Year on five of a possible 11 ballots. The sophomore from Snellville, Ga. leads the SEC in sacks with 13 for -83 yards, which tied the Georgia single-season record for sacks. He also leads the league in tackles for losses with 22 for -111 yards. For the season, Pollack has 97 total tackles (55 solos) with two interceptions, two forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also leads the SEC in quarterback pressures, accumulating 34 in 13 games.
Doster was named the SEC Freshman of the Year on five of a possible 11 ballots. The Tampa, Fla., native, led the Commodores and all SEC freshmen in rushing, with 798 yards on 160 carries and three touchdowns. Doster was also third in the SEC and 17th in the nation in kickoff return average with 25.7 yards per return in 24 attempts. He was fourth in the SEC in all-purpose rushing with 1,523 total yards, an average of 138.5 yards per game.
Andrews was named the winner of the Jacobs Blocking Trophy, given annually to the league's top blocker and voted by the SEC's coaches. The sophomore from Camden, Ark., was a key performer for the Razorbacks, who finished as co-champions of the Western Division and were the divisional representatives to the SEC Championship Game and have a 9-4 overall and 5-3 SEC record.
Richt was named the SEC Coach of the Year by his peers. Richt directed the Bulldogs to an 12-1 overall and 7-1 SEC record. The Bulldogs captured their first SEC Championship since 1982 and will play Florida State in the Nokia Sugar Bowl.
While the All-SEC squad had 17 first-team seniors, 13 were underclassmen, including nine juniors and four sophomores. Including the second-team, 15 seniors were selected, 11 juniors and four sophomores.
Georgia led all SEC teams with six players on the first-team followed by Alabama and Kentucky with four. 10 of the 12 SEC teams had a representative on the first-team All-SEC squad. All 12 SEC teams are represented on either the first or second teams.
Georgia, with five players on the second unit, had the most players on the squad with 11. LSU had eight players on both units, inclduing three on the first team and five on the second team.
LSU linebacker Bradie James was the only repeat first-team selection from last year's squad.
There were no unanimous All-SEC selections.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players, thus a unanimous selection earns 11 of 12 first-team votes.
