EL PASO -- Although the Vols exploded for a 21-point halftime advantage, they could not withstand Maryland's second half run, similar to the Terps' record-breaking comeback victory over Miami after trailing the Hurricanes 31-0. In the first two quarters of play, the Tennessee offense performed like a finely tuned machine, marching 69 yards on 10 plays for a touchdown on their second posession of the game. Field goals of 24 and 52 yards from Fuad Reveiz and a six-yard scoring strike from Tony Robinson to Tim McGee concluded the first half scoring, giving the Vols a comfortable 21-9 lead. It took Maryland less than three minutes into the second half to shatter the Vols' hopes of a shutout, as Terp running back Tommy Neal raced 57 yards for a touchdown. The Terpsreeled off 22 unanswered points to take a one point lead, before reserve running back Pete Panuska returned a Maryland kickoff 100 yards giving Tennessee a 27-22 advantage after three quarters of play. Maryland regained the lead for good, marching 43 yards on 12 plays as Sun Bowl Most Valuable Player Rick Badanjek scored from the one with 2:28 remaining. The Vols employed the two minute offense, swiftly advancing the ball from their own 18 yard line into Maryland territory. But with 1:12 left to play Terp defender Keeta Covington jarred the ball loose from Tony Robinson and Maryland recovered on its 30-yard line, terminating the Vols' attempt as a last minute victory.
