Washington Among Three Regulars to Miss South Carolina Game
October 31, 2002 | Football
Sophomore wide receiver Kelley Washington misses his second consecutive start and is joined this week by defensive end Demetrin Veal and reserve defensive tackle Edward Kendrick. Those three players have been ruled out for Saturday's game by the UT Sports Medicine staff and head coach Phillip Fulmer. The addition of Veal brings to 12 the number of Volunteer starters that will have missed a combined 37 complete games by the end of Saturday's SEC clash with the Gamecocks.
"In regards to our injury status for the game, Demetrin Veal is not going to be able to go, as well as Ed Kendrick," Fulmer said. "Also, Kelley Washington is out indefinitely because of circumstances as a result of the concussion. We'll miss those guys, but we are prepared to go without them playing and win a football game."
Washington suffered the concussion during the Oct. 12 game at Georgia on his final catch, a 45-yard reception and run that put the Vols in position for their second touchdown during an eventual 18-13 setback.
The Stephens City, Va., native has 23 catches for 443 yards -- both team highs despite only four games played. He missed the first two games of the season with a knee sprain and last week's game against Alabama and remains out indefinitely because of circumstances as a result of the concussion.
Veal started the first five games this season at right defensive tackle before moving to the right end position against Georgia and Alabama. The senior from Paramount, Calif., was injured early against the Crimson Tide yet still has 31 tackles including a team-high six for lost yardage. His three sacks lead the team and his six quarterback hurries are tied for tops.
Kendrick turned in his best games this season against Middle Tennessee and Georgia, registering five and four tackles respectively. The Macon, Ga., senior has 15 tackles for the year and four quarterback hurries.
Thursday, UT concluded its practice preparations for Saturday's game against South Carolina (3:30 p.m. Eastern time) by working for 90 minutes at Hudson Field. Tennessee will depart for Columbia Friday afternoon and stage a walk-through at Williams-Brice Stadium.
"Our team had a good workout tonight," Fulmer said. "They have been into practice all week and everybody is anxious to get back on a good track. Yesterday's workouts and tonight's I believe have been exceptional and I am pleased going into Saturday's game."
INJURY REPORT (South Carolina Game Week): Probable -- OT Michael Munoz (shoulder), LB Robert Peace (shoulder); Out -- DT Edward Kendrick (ankle), DE Demetrin Veal (calf), WR Kelley Washington (concussion).
