KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
Vanderbilt junior midfielder Jennifer Lewis scored 5:24 into Friday night's Southeastern Conference match and the staunch Commodore defense made the goal stand en route to a 1-0 upset of the 13th-ranked Lady Vols. With the victory, VU improved to 4-6 overall and an even 2-2 in league play. Tennessee (9-4/2-1 SEC) saw an end to its record nine-match winning streak at the UT Soccer Complex and suffered its first loss in Knoxville to a league foe since Oct. 20, 2000, when Mississippi State left town with a 1-0 triumph.
"All of the credit tonight goes to Vanderbilt," said head coach Angela Kelly. "Jen Lewis scored a world-class goal and although my girls battled and dominated the second half, we couldn't find a way to put the ball in the back of the net. Our mind-set is now focusing on Kentucky. People say that you learn from losses to get better. We are excited to have a match in two days."
Lewis gained possession of an errant Lady Vol clearing attempt in the defensive zone and launched a shot from around 20 yards out that eluded senior goalkeeper Ellen Dean (Memphis, Tenn.). The tally was the first of the campaign for the junior from Birmingham, Ala.
Despite holding a 17-10 advantage in shots, including five attempts by senior forward Kim Patrick (Pleasanton, Calif.) and three from sophomore defender Keeley Dowling (Carmel, Ind.), Tennessee could not solve the goaltending of Commodore junior Esther Thompson. A transfer from Texas A&M prior to this season, the keeper made seven saves to deliver her second straight shutout. Vanderbilt blanked South Carolina last Sunday afternoon, 2-0. UT also had a 10-4 edge in corner kicks.
Tennessee will resume action on Sunday when Kentucky (7-5/2-2 SEC) visits for a 2 p.m. encounter. The Wildcats ousted the Lady Vols from the 2001 SEC Tournament, 4-2. Meanwhile, the Commodores will head to Athens to meet the University of Georgia (5-7-1/1-2 SEC). The Dawgs handled the Wildcats tonight by a 5-1 margin.
