Tennessee wide receiver Kelley Washington was named to the inaugural Football Writers Association of America's Freshman All-America Team.
Washington led the Vols, who finished 2001 with an 11-2 mark, in receiving with 64 catches for 1010 yards. He ranked sixth in the SEC in catches per game (5.3) and 84.2 yards per outing. Washington earned consensus Freshman All-SEC honors and was named to the The Sporting News Freshman All-America first team.
The Stephens City, Va., native caught two touchdown passes in the Vols' 45-17 win over Michigan in last week's Capital One Citrus Bowl.
In the Vols 26-18 win over LSU, Washington caught 11 passes for a school record 256 yards and one touchdown. The 256 receiving yards set a freshman SEC record. He was named the league's offensive player of the week for his efforts against the Tigers.
The team was chosen by a panel of FWAA members representing each conference. The panel submitted nominations over the course of the season and an Internet vote by the panel was held position by position accordingly.
Division I-A players competing in their first year of college football were eligible.
