JACKSON NAMED edsouth ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.
University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer basketball player Gwen Jackson has been selected as the edsouth Lady Vol Athlete of the Month for December. The junior forward averaged 14.7 points per game and 8.7 rebounds per game and posted double-doubles against #8 N.C. State, DePaul and #9 Duke, as the Orange and White went 6-0 in December.
The Eufaula, Ala., native enjoyed a big month as she scored a season-high 20 points against ninth-ranked Duke on 8-of-13 shooting to go along with 10 rebounds. She also pulled down 12 boards apiece in victories over N.C. State and DePaul and hit 11-of-12 free throws in tallying 15 points to help UT defeat Boston College, 75-66.
A preseason Naismith Player of the Year candidate, Jackson has scored in double-figures in seven of the 10 Lady Vol contests in which she has played this year and is first on the squad in rebounding average (8.1) and total rebounds (81), while ranking third in scoring average (12.8 ppg).
Within the Southeastern Conference, the 6'2" forward currently ranks fourth in rebounding average (8.1 rpg), fifth in free throw percentage (.818 on 36-of-44 from the charity stripe) and is 18th in scoring.
Next up for Jackson and the Lady Vols is a visit from #24 Old Dominion (7-4) on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at the Thompson-Boling Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. and the contest will be shown on Comcast.
The other nominees for the edsouth Lady Vol Athlete of the Month award were UT basketball players Kara Lawson and Michelle Snow.
