KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Marcus Haislip scored 24 points and Vincent Yarbrough added 16 as Tennessee beat Auburn 82-59 Sunday afternoon.
The Volunteers (9-10, 2-4 Southeastern Conference), playing their fourth game in nine days, took control early and never trailed en route to their fourth straight win over Auburn (9-9, 1-6).
Tennessee led by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Tigers cut it to nine after Marquis Daniels' 3-pointer with 14:17 left, but could not get closer.
The Vols responded with a 13-3 run to stretch the lead back to 18. Thaydeus Holden got two steals during the span, and the second led to a 3 by Yarbrough that gave Tennessee a 60-41 lead with 9:28 to go. The Vols continued to expand their lead as Auburn fell apart, committing turnovers and missing bad shots in its most lopsided loss of the season.
Rebounding helped the Vols. They had the edge, 43-24.
Auburn only had two offensive rebounds in the first half and finished with eight, while Tennessee had 19 offensive rebounds for the game.
Haislip had eight rebounds, six on the offensive glass.
Daniels scored 14 points for Auburn, and Brandon Robinson added 12.
Auburn made it close midway through the first half. A 7-2 run by the Tigers capped by Derrick Bird's basket in the lane cut a 6-point deficit to 13-12 with 10:01 left before halftime.
But then the Vols reeled off a 13-0 run over the next four minutes. Yarbrough scored five points during the spurt, including a falling jumper that gave Tennessee a 26-12 lead.
Tennessee stretched its lead to 32-14 after Grindstaff hit a pair of free throws with 3:58 to go in the half. Auburn cut the lead to 10 points in the next minute and a half, but Tennessee closed the first half with two 3-pointers by Del Baker to go ahead 39-26 at halftime.
Tennessee, already down a post player with Ron Slay out with a torn ACL, had another player on the sidelines Sunday. Freshman Elgrace Wilborn hurt his knee in the last game and reaggravated it in practice.
