LEXINGTON, Ky.-- Tennessee senior Peter Handoyo made history Sunday at the 2002 SEC Indoor Championships in Lexington, Ky. Handoyo became the first player in the open era (since 1988) to win the SEC's singles and doubles titles in the same season. Prior to 1988, individual championships were determined by position and their were no overall champions.
The two-time All-America and three-time All-SEC performer won his semifinal and final matches in singles and the doubles final Sunday, with partner freshman Mark Dietrich, to put the finishing touches on his historic double. Handoyo began the day by avenging a loss he suffered in last year's NCAA final against Georgia's sixth-seeded Lesley Joseph. Handoyo dominated their semifinal match 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the championship round. Handoyo then added to his already impressive collegiate resume, with a 6-2, 6-3 whitewashing of Kentucky's No. 10-ranked Jesse Witten in the final.
"This was just great to win the SEC championship," Handoyo said. "I am very pleased with the way I played, considering how many great players there were at this event."
Handoyo kept up his fine play in the doubles final, pairing with Dietrich to capture his second SEC doubles title (2000, with Andy Crews). The fifth-seeded Vol duo defeated No. 36-ranked and seventh-seeded Olivier Levant and Eleazor Magallan of Florida 8-6 to take home top honors.
"This was a great experience, especially playing with Pete (Handoyo)," Dietrich said. "Pete is a great leader and I learned a lot from him this week. This is a great boost for our team and for me individually."
"This gives us great confidence for the upcoming team season," offered UT head coach Michael Fancutt. "To see Pete (Handoyo) dominate the SEC tournament the way he did was very impressive. This was also a big win for us in doubles. Doubles, I feel have been a weakness for our team recently. But with the emergence of Peter and Mark to go along with Mario Toledo and Simon Rea, who had a great fall as a tandem, I feel doubles can become a strength. I am very proud of our boys today."
The Vols will be back in action for their dual-match opener Saturday at home against the Citadel and UT-Chattanooga. The Citadel match will begin at 10 a.m., followed by the UTC match at 3 p.m. at the Goodfriend Indoor Tennis Center on the UT campus. Admission is free.
