Vols Eliminated From adidas Invitational

INDIAN WELLS, Cal.-- The Tennessee tennis team had two players reach the semifinal round before falling Saturday at the adidas Invitational in Indian Wells, Cal. The Vols began the day with three players and two doubles tandems still alive in the main draw, but by the end of the day the Vols were eliminated.
Tennessee senior Mario Toledo began the day with a 5-7, 7-6, 6-2 quarterfinal victory over Duke's Alex Bose. Toledo would then be ousted in the semifinal round by the nation's No. 4-ranked player, Al Garland of Pepperdine.
Freshman Mark Dietrich advanced to his second consecutive tournament semifinal Saturday with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Pepperdine's Bryan Wright. Dietrich would then lose his semifinal matchup to Duke's Peter Schultz 7-6, 6-0. Schultz had ended Tennessee freshman Michael Maddox's tournament earlier in the quarterfinal round 6-2, 6-3. Tennessee sophomore Wade Orr lost in the second round of the consolation bracket to UCLA's No. 7-ranked Jean-Julien Rojer 7-5, 6-2.
The Vols doubles teams began well Saturday, with both tandems beginning victoriously. The duo of Maddox and Orr first defeated McNaught and Crease of UCLA 8-6, before losing their second round matchup with Pepperdine's Wright and Racioppi 8-4. The Tennessee tandem of Dietrich and Simon Rea also started with a win before bowing out to Pepperdine's No. 1-seeded Graef and Suter 8-4.
The Tennis Vols will next be in action Oct. 5 at the All American Championships in Stone Mtn., Ga. The All-American is the first leg of the collegiate grand slam.
