Washington Sets Receiving Mark in 26-18 Win Over LSU
Following tonight's 26-18 win Tennessee leads the series against LSU 19-4-3, including a 11-1-1 mark in Knoxville ... The Vols defeated the Tigers four of the last five meetings ... LSU's only win in Knoxville came in 1988 (34-9) ... Attendance: 108,472-second-largest in Neyland Stadium history (108,768 vs. Florida, 2000 is the record) ... Tennessee improves to 3-0 (2-0 SEC), while LSU falls to 2-1 (0-1 SEC).
Tonight's game was the first for both teams in three weeks ... Both schools had SEC games postponed Sept. 15 and had scheduled open dates last week ... UT's game at Florida and LSU's home date with Auburn were postponed to Dec. 1 ... Tonight's game was the SEC opener for LSU ... The Vols defeated Arkansas 13-3 in their league opener Sept. 8 ... Tennessee is 2-0 in the SEC for the first time since winning the SEC and National titles in 1998.
Tennessee head coach Phillip Fulmer is the nation's winningest active head coach...Following today's game, Fulmer has a 87-18 (.829) mark now in his 10th season at his alma mater, including a 51-4 mark at Neyland Stadium...Fulmer's overall SEC record is now 58-12, including a 24-4 mark against SEC West opponents ... The Vols' head coach now has a 30-14 mark against ranked teams.
Tennessee has won 39 of its last 41 games at Neyland Stadium, including 19 of its last 20 SEC games-the only loss in that span was a 27-23 loss to Florida last season ... The Vols are 64-8 at home since 1990 (6th nationally during that time span).
Coming off an open date, the Vols are now 68-33-9 all-time and 32-19-2 in SEC games ... Under Phillip Fulmer, Tennessee is 16-4 the week following an open date
WR Kelley Washington set a UT single game reception yardage record with 256 yards tonight, breaking Johnny Mills record of 225 yards set against Kentucky in 1966 ... Washington hauled in 11 catches and had one touchdown tonight, including a career-best 70-yard reception from Clausen to give the Vols a 19-7 advantage in the third quarter ... He became just the fifth UT player to amass 200 yards receiving ... Washington's 256 yards the most for a UT receiver since Peerless Price had 199 against Florida State in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl.
Tennessee's Defense, which entered the game as the nation's leader in total defense (141.0/game), gave up 18 points tonight and has surrendered just 24 in three games this season (8.0/game) ... The Vols limited LSU to just 21 yards in the third quarter as Tennessee took control of the game.
Senior tailback Travis Stephens gained a 95yards on 34 carries tonight ... Stephens entered the game as the SEC's leading rusher (3rd in NCAA), averaging 158.5 yards per game ...He tied the UT single-game rushing attempt record with 41 attempts in the Vols' last game at Arkansas and picked a career-high 206 yards.
QB Casey Clausen completed 18-of-28 for 309 yards with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions tonight ... He had the hot hand in the second half, completing 10-of-12 for 190 yards and one TD ... Clausen is now 9-1 as a starter at quarterback for the Vols and 7-0 vs. SEC teams ... His three-yard scoring run to give Tennessee its first lead (12-7 in the third quarter) was the first rushing touchdown of his UT career ... Clausen's younger brother, Rick, is a freshman quarterback for LSU.
RB Troy Fleming saw his first action tonight after missing the first two games with an ankle injury ... Fleming ripped off a 10-yard gain on his first carry of the season tonight ... He finished the game with 42 yards on eight carries.
LB Keyon Whiteside stopped LSU's first drive at the UT 29 with a quarterback sack of Rohan Davey ... Whiteside's hit forced a fumble, which he recovered ... The hit was Whiteside's first career sack
PK Alex Walls connected on 2-of-3 field goals tonight, with makes from 44 and 42 yards... Walls got the Vols on the scoreboard with a 42-yard second quarter field goal ... For his career, Walls in now 31-of-38, including 8-of-12 from beyond 40 yards ... He missed tonight from 47.
