Vols Open Play at adidas Invitational

INDIAN WELLS, Cal.-- The Tennessee tennis team began the adidas Invitation with three Vols advancing to the quarterfinal rounds in the respective brackets Friday in Indian Wells, Cal.
Tennessee senior Mario Toledo advanced to the quarterfinal round of the "A" bracket after a bye and a 6-3, 6-3 win over Arizona State's Chris Stewart. Tennessee freshmen Mark Dietrich and Michael Maddox also advanced to the quarterfinal round Friday in the "B" bracket. Dietrich received a first round bye before ousting UCLA's Derrick Nguyen 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. Maddox began with a victory over Spencer Straub of Portland before taking out UCLA's Ryan McNaughton 7-6, 6-2.
Tennessee sophomore Simon Rea has advanced to the semifinals of his last three tournaments, including a win at last week's Southern Intercollegiate. Rea would not fair as well today. Rea started well with a 7-6, 6-2 win over Duke's Yorke Allen, but was then defeated by Pepperdine's Stephan Suter 7-6, 6-3. Fellow sophomore Wade Orr lost his first round match 7-5, 6-7, 6-4 to Duke's Michael Yani.
Doubles play will open Saturday at the west coast event.
