In special ceremonies before and at halftime of the Tennessee-LSU game Saturday night, the University of Tennessee will pay tribute to those who died and the numerous heroes who have emerged since the terrorist attacks Sept. 11 on New York, Washington, D. C., and western Pennsylvania near Pittsburgh. Pregame and halftime performances by the University's "Pride of the Southland Marching Band" will honor the memories of those who died and the heroism of those who came to the rescue.
After the traditional pre-game show and the opening of the "T" at the north end, the band will be joined on the field by the LSU Golden Band from Tigerland, UT captains Will Bartholomew, John Henderson, Andre Lott, Will Overstreet, and Fred Weary, LSU captains Trev Faulk, Rohan Davey and Robert Royal, and members of the two teams.
Following the invocation by Rev. Dr. Kay Reynolds, chaplain of the Tyson House Episcopal Campus Ministry, Andrew Wentzel, Assistant Professor, School of Music, will make his debut singing the "National Anthem." Following the anthem, United States Senator Fred Thompson will have special remarks and the pre-game ceremonies will be capped as everyone in the stadium is asked to join the band in the singing of Irving Berlin's "God Bless America."
The Pride's halftime ceremonies will begin with "This Is My Country," followed by a special tribute to New York City and its citizens with highlights from the city's most famous musical, Leonard Bernstein's "West Side Story." The Pride will conclude the evening's festivities with Wentzel leading the crowd in "America the Beautiful."
