KAOHSIUNG, Chinese Taipei-- Tennessee senior Peter Handoyo won his first career ATP title this week at the $15,000 ATP Futures Taipei Open in Kaohsiung, Chinese Taipei. Handoyo, from Indonesia, teamed up with Australian Ashley Ford to capture the Taipei Open doubles title and 18 ATP tour points. Handoyo finished this past season leading the Vols in wins and winning percentage, as well as gaining All-America and All-SEC honors in the Vols' run to the NCAA final.
The pair began the tournament with a 2-6 6-2 6-3 victory over fourth-seeded Assaf Drori of Israel and Martin Slanar of Australia 2-6 6-2 6-3, before defeating Chia-Che Liu and Yen-Hsun Lu of Taipei 6-4, 6-4 in the second round. Handoyo and Ford then defeated Simon Shen of the U.S.A. and Yeu-Tzuoo Wang of Taipei in the semifinal round 6-7(5) 6-4 6-3. In the finals, Handoyo and Ford defeated Seong-Yoon Chung and Dong-Hyun Kim of Korea 7-5 6-7(7) 6-2 to take the title.
"We are very proud of Peter being able to go overseas and display his talent in these professional tournaments," Tennessee assistant coach Chris Mahony said. "I think it says a lot about our guys in that they have been able to compete so well on the Futures circuits this summer. This title (Taipei Open) is really going to be a big boost for Peter's career, not only from a tour points perspective, but also from the experience gained. Hopefully he will continue to improve and come back to Knoxville ready to lead our team in the 2002 season."
Handoyo also competed in the singles side of the event, where he was ousted in the second round by doubles partner and fifth seeded Ashley Ford.
Handoyo is playing the ATP events as an amateur and is keeping no winnings to remain eligble for his senior season as a Vol.
